Claudio DeSanti et al.VLAN Discovery Clarifications, T11/12-218v2, October 2012Claudio DeSanti (Cisco), Prafulla Deuskar (Intel), Joe White (Juniper)1 VLAN Discovery Clarifications7.9.2 FIP VLAN discovery protocol7.9.2.1 OverviewWhen becoming operational, an ENode MAC or an FCF-MAC may invoke the FIP VLAN discoveryprotocol to discover the VLANs in the Lossless Ethernet network that provide FC-BB_E services. AVN2VN ENode MAC may use the FIP VLAN discovery protocol to discover the VLANs in the LosslessEthernet network over which the Locally Unique N_Port_ID protocol may be used. The FIPVLAN discovery protocol is not needed if these VLANs are already known or if VLANs are not used.7.9.2.2 ENode/FCF VLAN DiscoveryAn ENode MAC may send a FIP VLAN Request frame to the All-FCF-MACs MAC address over anavailable VLAN (e.g., the port VLAN). VF_Port capable FCF-MACs that receive a FIP VLAN Requestframe shall respond with a unicast FIP VLAN Notification frame over the same VLAN. The FIP VLANNotification frame should provide the list of VLAN IDs over which the originating FCF offers FC-BB_Eservices. The ENode MAC that received a FIP VLAN Notification frame may enable one or more ofthese VLANs for subsequent operations. VF_Port capable FCF-MACs may limit the number of VLANIDs listed in a FIP VLAN Notification frame on a per-requester basis.Figure 1 informatively shows how an ENode MAC determines the VLANs to use for FCoE.ENode MAC becomesoperationalPerform FIP VLANDiscovery toAll-FCF-MACsNoIs therea static FCoE VLANconfiguration?YesNoDid FIP VLANDiscovery provideFCoE VLANs?YesSelect FCoEVLANSIn each of the selectedFCoE VLANs perform:FIP Discovery protocol,Virtual Link Instantiation protocol,Virtual Link Maintenance protocol.Use a defaultFCoE VLANFigure 1 – VLAN Discovery Processing in an ENode MACA VF_Port capable FCF-MAC shall discard a multicast FIP VLAN Request frame that has a sourceaddress equal to its FCF-MAC address, and the FIP VLAN Request frame should be reported in avendor specific way as an indication of a MAC address duplication.1

VLAN Discovery Clarifications, T11/12-218v2, October 2012Claudio DeSanti et al.VF_Port capable FCF-MACs shall listen to the All-FCF-MACs group address in the default VLAN andin other VLANs that ENodes may use to invoke this protocol. If the configuration of VLANs on which a VF_Port capable FCF-MAC supports FC-BB_E serviceschanges, that FCF-MAC should send a unicast FIP VLAN Notification frame to each ENode MACaddress with which that FCF-MAC has established VN_Port to VF_Port Virtual Links. The unicast FIPVLAN Notification frame shall carry the revised list of VLAN IDs over which the originating VF_Portcapable FCF-MAC offers FC-BB_E services and should be sent over the VLAN from which VLANDiscovery Requests were received.Additional VLANs may provide FC-BB_E services when additional FCFs are connected to thenetwork to which an ENode MAC is connected. In order to discover these additional VLANs, anENode MAC may send a FIP VLAN Request frame to the All-FCF-MACs MAC address on a periodicbasis.NOTE 1 – Given that the availability of additional VLANs is due to network configuration changes, an appropriateperiod value for this activity is 20 seconds.7.9.2.3 FCF/FCF VLAN DiscoveryA VE_Port capable FCF-MAC may send a FIP VLAN Request frame to the MAC address All-FCF-MACs over an available VLAN (e.g., the default VLAN). VE_Port capable FCF-MACs that receive aFIP VLAN Request frame shall respond with a unicast FIP VLAN Notification frame over the sameVLAN. The FIP VLAN Notification frame carries the list of VLAN IDs over which the originating FCFoffers FC-BB_E services. Such a VLAN Request frame should be reported in a vendorspecific way as an indication of a MAC address duplication.VE_Port capable FCF-MACs shall listen to the All-FCF-MACs group address in the default VLAN andin other VLANs that ENodes or FCFs may use to invoke this protocol. If the configuration of VLANs on which a VE_Port capable FCF-MAC supports FC-BB_E serviceschanges, that FCF-MAC should send a unicast FIP VLAN Notification frame to each FCF-MACaddress with which that FCF-MAC has established VE_Port to VE_Port Virtual Links. The unicast FIPVLAN Notification frame shall specify the revised list of VLAN IDs over which the originating VE_Portcapable FCF-MAC offers FC-BB_E services and should be sent over the VLAN from which VLANDiscovery Requests were received.Additional VLANs may provide FC-BB_E services when additional FCFs are connected to thenetwork to which a VE_Port capable FCF-MAC is connected. In order to discover these additionalVLANs, a VE_Port capable FCF-MAC may send a FIP VLAN Request frame to the All-FCF-MACsMAC address on a periodic basis.NOTE 2 – Given that the availability of additional VLANs is due to network configuration changes, an appropriateperiod value for this activity is 20 seconds.2

A VN2VN ENode MAC may send a FIP VLAN Requestframe to the All-VN2VN-ENode-MACs MAC address over an available VLAN (e.g., the port VLAN). AVN2VN ENode configured to provide VLANs information to the other VN2VN ENodes shall respondwith a unicast FIP VLAN Notification frame over the same VLAN. The FIP VLAN Notification frameshould provide the list of VLAN IDs over which the Locally Unique N_Port_ID protocol may be used. The ENode MAC that received a FIP VLAN Notification frame may enable one or more of theseVLANs for subsequent operations. VN2VN ENodes configured to provide VLANs information to theother VN2VN ENodes may limit the number of VLAN IDs listed in a FIP VLAN Notification frame on aper-requester basis.3

A FIP VLAN Request frame may begenerated by an ENode MAC, by an FCF-MAC, or by a VN2VN ENode MAC.When generated by an ENode MAC or by a VN2VN ENode MAC, the FIP VLAN Request frame shallhave the F flag set to zero and the MAC address field in the MAC address descriptor shall be set tothe originating ENode MAC address. If a Name_Identifier descriptor is present, the Name_Identifierfield should be set to the Node_Name of the originating ENode. When generated by an FCF-MAC, the FIP VLAN Request frame shall have the F flag set to one andthe MAC address field in the MAC address descriptor shall be set to the originating FCF-MACaddress. If a Name_Identifier descriptor is present, the Name_Identifier field should be set to theSwitch_Name of the originating FCF.7.9.8.8 FIP VLAN NotificationAs specified in table 45, a FIP VLAN Notification operation contains a MAC address descriptor (see7.8.6.3.3) and one or more VLAN descriptors (see 7.8.6.3.15). A FIP VLAN Notification frame isgenerated by an FCF-MAC or by a VN2VN ENode MAC.When generated by an FCF-MAC, the FIP VLAN Notification frame shall have the F flag set to oneand the MAC address field in the MAC address descriptor shall be set to the originating FCF-MACaddress. The FCoE VID field of each of the FIP VLAN descriptors shall be set to a VID over which theFCF-MAC is offering FC-BB_E services. When generated by a VN2VN ENode MAC, the FIP VLAN Notification frame shall have the F flag setto zero and the MAC address field in the MAC address descriptor shall be set to the originatingVN2VN ENode MAC address. The FCoE VID field of each of the FIP VLAN descriptors shall be set toa VID over which the Locally Unique N_Port_ID protocol may be used.5
