In the middle of village(near a supermarket), take the turning forLysos. It’s a relatively easy ride to Lysos as longas you keep an eye on the road signs. The hardpart comes later.TOURISM Pay a visit to the Byzantine church ofthe Virgin Mary (Panagia Chryseleousas) withits beautiful mural in the sanctuary. Then makeyour way to Caroline’s Ranch (99777624 / www.rideincyprus.com) if horse riding is your thingor you can always test your shooting skills on thevillage range. Alternatively, if you like fishing youcan drive to the Evretou Dam which is consideredone of the best in Europe for bass and carp. Lateryou need to go to Stavros tis Psokas where, ifyou’re lucky, you will see some moufflon (thewild sheep that is endemic to Cyprus) and youcan have a picnic at the campsite. Make sure tostop in Cedar Valley and enjoy the intoxicatingscent of its 30,000 cedars of Lebanon. Your 4X4adventure ends in the Pafos village of Panayiawhere you should visit the birthplace of theisland’s first president Archbishop Makarios IIIand the adjacent Cultural Centre (26922255) whichfeatures manuscripts, vestments and personalphotographs. If you enjoy walking in nature, takethe Vouni Panagia circular walking path (category3) at the highest point of which you can enjoy asuperb view of the village, Akamas, the Pafosforest and the Troodos mountains.FOOD For good Cypriot cuisine, go to the restaurantof the Paradisos Hills Hotel (26322287 / www.paradisoshills.com) at Lysos. On Fridays bear inmind that the menu changes and the buffet tableis filled with Indian dishes.SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? ParadisosHills (26322287/www.paradisoshills.com) atLysos is a great choice not only for food butfor an overnight stay too. A double room withbreakfast costs €81. If you want to stay at Panayia,there are two agrotourism places: Stelios’ House(99433094, €50 per night) and Liakoto (99543878,€45 studio for 2 persons).HikingLemythouVasa KilanioyLemythou, Treis Elies,Kaminaria, AgiosNikolaos, Arsos,Vasa KilaniouGPS Lemythou is near Prodromos. Kato Drysalso go the other way round and get to Vasa Kilanioufrom Limassol, taking the Erimi turnoff.TOURISM At Lemythou you’ll find the Parakentrocultural centre (25462809/ www.parakentro.com)where artists and researchers from all over theworld stay, work and exhibit. As you make yourway towards Kaminaria, go through the village andyou will come to one of the most picturesque placesanywhere in Cyprus: the great stone Venetianbridges. First the Elea Bridge and then the biggerand more impressive Kelefos Bridge. The sightof the Arminou Dam below is also magical. Onceyou’ve taken lots of photos, get back in the car andhead for Arsos. Don’t miss the Folk Art Museumwith its old farm implements, photos, traditionalbridal gowns, furniture and, basically, everythingthat today’s Cypriots’ great-grandfathers had intheir homes, and pay a visit to one or both ofthe two village wineries, Laona (25943200) andNicolettino (99995288). Your last stop should bethe School Museum at Vasa (Sun 10am-12.30pm& 2.30pm-5.30pm. On other days, call PanicosArgyrides, the village headman, on 99649139)which is housed in the old village school buildingand presents a vivid picture of how things wereat school in the old days.FOOD Head for Leonidas’ tavern at Kaminaria(99945975) for the most delicious meze dishesimaginable (from stuffed vine leaves and meatballsto spit-roast meats and pasta) and pay only €15.And if it’s a meze of traditional Cypriot dishesyou’re after, you can also find a great one at twotavernas at Vasa. Pyrkos (25942655) and Palati(25943888) will both treat you to dishes you won’tbe offered at any restaurant in town, includingtraditional sausages, wonderful spare ribs andother seasonal items.SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? There aremany excellent places to stay in the area. At Arsosthere is Cornaro House (99314684, 25358836)which charges €58 for a suite/studio and €68 forone-bedroom apartments. At Lemythou, ThemisHouse (22422938, 25465525, €50 for two persons)is a 10-apartment stone-built complex with aJacuzzi, whist at Vasa the best agrotourism optionis the Roti House (99373722, €85 with breakfastfor 2 persons) with its wonderful garden andauthentic traditional setting.COSMO-POLITANTroodosKakopetriaKakopetria, Spilia,TroodosGPS It’s easy to get to Kakopetriabut hard to leave. Head from Nicosiato Troodos and you’ll be therein 40 minutes.TOURISM As you enter Old Kakopetria on thewest side of the village, you’ll see the imposingCouple’s Rock, after which a picturesque land-10 Time OuT Cyprus | Eating guidE 2013

scape unfolds before you with the enchantingold houses of Kakopetria taking centre stage. Thevillage has rivers on either side, the Karkotis andthe Garyllis, and you can hear the faint sound ofwater wherever you are. If you also appreciatecolours, sounds and scents, you should head forSpilia, a village famed for its grapes and walnuts– indeed there is an ancient walnut tree therewhich is alleged to be the oldest on the island.In the middle of the village, the old olive press isone of the finest examples in the area. Anotherinteresting place with an equally interesting nameis the “Tomb of the Plague”, two huge rocksbalanced the one upon the other in a singularlyodd manner. Spilia is worth a visit not only forits historical connections but for its famed walkingpaths such as ‘Black Forest’ which starts atthe crossroads linking the villages of Kannavia,Lagoudera and Kyperounda.FOOD At the traditional and welcoming Sama Tav-erna (22316473, 99571112), located in the centreof Spilia, the focus is on quality and traditionalrecipes. For fish, and in particular trout, go to theMylos restaurant at Kakopetria (22922929).SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? The MarjayInn (22922208, €58 per night or €70 for the traditionalroom) in the centre of Spilia offers breakfastand other meals. If you prefer to stay among thenarrow lanes of Kakopetria, the Maritsa Lodge(€80 per room) is just what you’re looking for.The price includes breakfast.has a large collection of paintings, including manyby one of Cyprus’ finest artists, the late TelemachosKanthos. Finally it’s on to Polystipos withits brand new nature trail hidden inside a hazelforest and the chapel of Saint Andrew which isthe jewel of village. You can obtain the key fromFather Georgios (22652061).FOOD At the Yiannakos Tavern (22633311) atFikardou you can order a rich meze (€15) andother freshly-made dishes. If you want somewherea little higher up, go to the Pantheon restaurant(22652502, 99491337) at Polystipos. On Saturdaysyou can have a meze (€13) which includes locallysourcedfresh fruit (such as grapes and apples)and home-made dessert, while on Sundays thereis a rich buffet (€14).SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? The RousiasMansion (22642734, 22750605, 99947143) at Pala-ichori is perfect for large groups (3-4 couples or8-10 persons) since it has 4 separate rooms whilethe courtyard with the large table and sofas areshared (€70 a night for 2 persons with breakfast).You’ll also have an unforgettable stay at Eugenia’sHouse (22642344, 99598499) at Askas, a 17 thcentury building with four fully-equipped rooms(from €50 per night for 2 persons).VavatsiniaFikardoumadariVavlafamilyFikardou, Gourri,Palaichori, Askas,Alona, Polystipos,MadariGPS From Nicosia, head towards Klirou and followthe signs to Fikardou. From Limassol, take theroad to Saittas, Kyperounda and Chandria andfrom there up to Madari with its incomparableview and countless nature trails.TOURISM After a walk around the narrow lanesof Fikardou for a glimpse into Cyprus’ past, driveto Gourri for a mahleb (weekdays) or tasty honeyballs (Sundays) at the coffee shop in the villagesquare. If you have time, visit the Weaving Work-shop (Mon-Fri 9am-1.30pm) where the loom isstill working to make everything from towels andcushion covers to priests’ vestments. When youreach Palaichori you should visit the Museumof Byzantine Heritage (99793362, 99974230, callahead for an appointment) to see its pricelesstreasures. Next comes Alona where you shouldlook for the house of amateur painter Takis whotraditionalVavla, Kato Drys,Lefkara, VavatsiniaGPS On the Limassol-Nicosia highway,take the Khirokitia exit andfollow the signs for Vavla. You’llbe there in 10 minutes.TOURISM Walk around the cobbled streets ofVavla and take pictures of the huge tiled-roofhouses there. To the east of Vavla is Kato Dryswhere the Folk Art Museum (24342648, Tue-Fri9am-2pm) is worth a visit to see the old weavingloom, old riding equipment, a wooden ploughand iron ploughshare, amphorae and other itemsthat were once part of the everyday life of thevillagers. Your contact with Cypriot traditiondoesn’t end here because we have saved thebest for last: Lefkara and its lacemakers who sitby the roadside and, in some cases, stare at youas if you’re from another planet! The walls ofthe houses are literally covered in Lefkara lace,which makes for a unique sight. Your journeyends north-west of Lefkara at Vavatsinia, greenand full of oak and chestnut trees where youshould pay a visit to the 16 th century church ofthe Virgin Mary (Panagia Chryseleousa) and seeits impressive women’s gallery.Eating guidE 2013 | Time OuT Cyprus 11

FOOD At the Lefkara Hotel & Restaurant(24342154), chef Athanasia prepares some excellentdishes while you can try the local speciality,Lefkara lamb or beef stew, at the Vavatsinia Taverna(24342780, 99342780) in the village of thesame name. If you decide on a meze, you’ll betreated to game dishes too.SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? GardenKamara House at Kato Drys costs €70 per nightfor two persons and it even has its own ruralmuseum. Elli Kornioti (99892677) can showyou around it and the whole village. At Lefkarawe recommend the Lefkara Hotel & Restaurant(24342154, 96351581, €60 per night for a doubleroom with breakfast) or Red Blue Door (99420984,99488272) with its two separate apartments,greatly resembling a boutique hotel (weekends€155 for the Red Room and €135 for the BlueRoom, weekdays €110 and €90 respectively).Lefkara also has the Kozakos Luxury Houses(99676704) in the main square.miliouKathikasWINE-FRIENDLYMiliou, Kritou Terra,Droushia, KathikasGPS From Pafos take the Polis roadand after passing Tsada, Stroumbiand Yiolou, turn left for Miliou. Thelandscape is a dream thanks to its greenery and,in particular, all the fruit trees. Go to the centre ofthe village and head for Akourdalia. All the villageson this route are close to one another. Just keepan eye open for the road signs.TOURISM The Laona-Akamas wine route passesthrough this area, hence the many vineyards,especially near Kathikas and Droushia. You’llhave a chance to taste wines made from theXynisteri and Maratheftiko grape varieties at twovery welcoming local wineries: Sterna (99699082)and K&K Vasilikon (99674004). Before you leaveKathikas, and making sure that you’re sober (!),take the opportunity of r a walk in the KoroniaGorge. If you don’t feel like walking you canalways ride on one of Trakkos’ friendly donkeys.Another breathtaking sight in the area is that ofthe huge rocks northwest of Droushia. FromDroushia, drive on to Kritou Terra and you’llcome across various reminders of the village’sformer cosmopolitan past: the old casino (theonly officially-sanctioned one to have existedon the island, whatever you may see on everystreet corner today), the old open-air cinema,the primary school and more.FOOD Pangratios (70003757) is a small tavernthat opened about two years ago at Miliou andhas become one of those not-to-be-missed placesthat people travel to from all over the island. Thevalue-for-money meze with dishes such as rabbit,sheep’s head and snails, and the taverna-stylebackground music will win you over from themoment you set foot in the place. is more towards gourmet cuisine, the blend offlavours, atmosphere and service at Amaroula atAyii Anargyri (26814000) will delight you, as willthe dishes served at the Akamas Health Farm &Spa at Droushia.SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? Since you’vedriven all the way to the hill resorts of Pafos, whynot stay and enjoy the area at your leisure? Ourfirst choice would be the Ayii Anargyri NaturalHealing Spa Resort at Miliou which costs just €95per night for a double room with breakfast. AtDroushia you’ll find the brand new Akamas HealthFarm & Spa (26332424/www.cyprushealthfarm.com) which combines relaxation, wellness and astay in luxury suites. If you visit during the lowseason, from 1 November prices drop to €48per person with breakfast, a Thalion treatmentand free use of various facilities. If you’re a fanof agrotourism, you’re spoilt for choice: there’sSappho at Droushia (26332650, 99604010, from €50per night for a studio) with its pretty garden andvine, or Makrinari (99603603, 26932931, €40-€50per night for 2 persons) near the fountainhead atKritou Terra, while you can rent a villa throughZ&X Villas (26945222 /www.zandxvillas.com).NikokleiaWILDWESTsalamiouNikokleia, Trachypedoula,SalamiouGPS To get to Nikokleia, on theLimassol-Pafos road near the Rockof Aphrodite, turn off towardsKouklia. From there the route to Trachypedoula issuperb and you won’t be able to take your eyes offthe multi-coloured rocky hillsides. This is naturalwilderness straight out of a road movie. The meat istraditionally roasted in clay ovens firedwith local aromatic carob or olive wood,and it gets so tender and soft it fallsoff the bone on your plate.Serves 4Ingredients1.5 to 2kg leg of lamb2 lemons, cut into 6 wedges each4 large potatoes, washed and each cut into 6wedgesA tablespoon of your Flavours of Cyprus herbmix0.25 tsp cinnamon250ml white wine or waterSalt & pepperMethodWash and pat dry the lamb. Make several deepslashes in the meaty parts with a sharp knife.Transfer the lamb to a roasting pan that hasbeen lined with heavy duty kitchen foil.Squeeze half of the lemon wedges over thelamb and rub the juice all over the meat.Push the squeezed lemon wedges into theslashes in the meat. Place the potatoes andtomatoes around the lamb, squeeze over theremaining lemon wedges and add them to thepan. Sprinkle over the cinnamon, the salt and agenerous amount of pepper. Rub the herbs inyour hands over the dish to bruise some of theleaves and sprinkle all over the lamb and thepotatoes. Add the wine or water to the base ofthe pan. Seal with more heavy duty kitchen foilto retain the moisture while cooking.
