Fourth Year 2012-2013 [MPhys Course]Major Options2 Major OptionsAlternative MajorOptionsMPhys ProjectsMPhys ProjectsHandbook 2012-2013Part C Finals for the 4-year MPhysIn Trinity Term, you are required to taketwo Major Options papers of your choice(see Appendix G). These papers togetherwith a project form Finals Part C for theMPhys course. Although you will have madea considered preliminary choice of optionsin Trinity Term of your third year, you mayrevise that choice at the start of MichaelmasTerm.If you wish to change, or have not yet indicatedyour choice, it is essential that youinform the Assistant Head of Teaching (Academic)no later than Friday of 0 th weekof Michaelmas (see http://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/students).Lectures and Classes for the MajorOptionsThe lectures for the Major Options take placefrom the start of Michaelmas Term until themiddle of Trinity Term. During Hilary Term,fewer lectures are given to allow time for theMPhys project.The lecture courses cover the material givenin the syllabuses in Appendix G at the backof the handbook.For each option there will be a total of 8classes, distributed roughly as: 4 classes inMichaelmas, 2 classes in Hilary and 2 classesin Trinity. More details on the Major Optionsare given via the Physics web page http://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/students.The Major Options available are:• C1: Astrophysics• C2: Laser Science and QuantumInformation Processing• C3: Condensed Matter Physics• C4: Particle Physics• C5: Physics of Atmospheres and Oceans• C6: Theoretical Physics• C7: Biological PhysicsEach of the seven physics Major Options areexamined in a single 3-hour paper. Answer4 questions from a choice of 8.The lectures are an integral part of the MajorOptions and as such you are strongly advisedto attend all lectures. Classes will be treatedlike tutorials and any absence, or failure tosubmit written work, will be reported to yourCollege.Alternative Major OptionsIt is possible to substitute another subject inplace of a Physics Major Option, providedthe course and exam already exist and areof sufficient weight. See the ExaminationRegulations on page 51.Permission must be sought from the Head ofthe Physics Teaching Faculty in Trinity Termof your third year via the Assistant Head ofTeaching (Academic) by e-mail at c.leonardmcintyre@physics.ox.ac.uk.Students willbe advised of the decision by the start ofMichaelmas Term at the latest.ProjectsProjects are carried out during Hilary Term.There is a compulsory Safety Lecture in7 th week of Michaelmas Term, which allMPhys students must attend. The MPhysProjects Handbook containing details of theprojects for the MPhys will be circulated atthe start of Michaelmas Term. This also containsa timetable for carrying out the projectwork and handing in the report. You mustspecify your choice of project by noon onFriday of 2 nd week, Michaelmas Term. Theallocation of projects will be published in 5 thweek. Before the end of Michaelmas Termstudents must contact their supervisor todiscuss the preparation for the project work.Three (3) copies of the final report with adeclaration of authorship and a copy of thereport in pdf format on a CD must be handedin to the Examination Schools by Mondayof 1 st week of Trinity Term. Exam EntryEntry for the MPhys Part C exam is at theend of 4 th week of Hilary Term (choice ofMajor Options and a project title). Specificdetails will be published by the Examiners.The Examination Regulations provides guidancefor students with special examinationneeds. “... An application ... shall be madeas soon as possible after matriculation and inany event not later than the date of entry ofthe candidate’s name for the first examinationfor which special arrangements are sought.”Please see the Examination Regulationshttp://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/examregs/ formore information.See Appendix B for information about thetypes of calculators which may be used inPublic examinations.Physics and PhilosophyThe fourth year comprises Part C of the FHS.The examination is in the latter part of TrinityTerm in both disciplines. Candidates willbe required to offer three units in Physics orPhilosophy, chosen in any combination fromthe lists for Physics and for Philosophy. Eachunit has a weight of 1⅓ for the purposes ofthe Finals algorithm, giving a total weight11½ for Parts A, B and C.A unit in Physics consists of either a writtenpaper on a Physics Major Option, or a projectreport on either advanced practical work orother advanced work. The Physics MajorOptions and the Projects are those specifiedon page 24 and in the MPhys Projects Handbook2012-2013. Syllabuses for the PhysicsMajor Options are given in Appendix G.A unit in Philosophy consists of one of thepermitted philosophy papers together witha submitted essay on a topic from the paper,or a philosophy thesis. For details see thePhysics and Philosophy Course Handbook.If you wish to offer a physics project, pleaserefer to the note on page 24 about projectallocation etc., and most importantly, youmust attend the Safety Lecture in 7 th weekof Michaelmas Term if you intend to doan experimental project.Physics and Philosophy25
