Reviewing and Updating the StrategyIn 2005, the DTO began the process of updating the integratedtransportation and land use strategy for the GDA, and completeda number of foundation tasks, including updating the tripattraction & generation model (TAGM) and developing a newtrip distribution model (TDM). The Office also produced a seriesof working papers on the proposed approach to the update.However, the DTO suspended this work, pending thelaunch of <strong>Transport</strong> 21, as the investment frameworkwill have a significant influence on the update.The DTO will recommence this task in 2007, witha view to completion within two years.page 24
5. Raising awarenessThe DTO works to raise the awareness amongst agencies,stakeholders and the general public of land use andtransport planning issues affecting the Greater DublinArea. Awareness-raising methods include hostingconferences and workshops, providing information andbriefings to the media and the public, addressing andattending seminars and organising promotional events.2006 was a very busy year for the DTO, during whichthe Office initiated and managed a number of highlyeffective awareness raising events and programmes.< Media and Public InformationThe Dublin <strong>Transport</strong>ation Office operates an open andhelpful media and public information service, whichfulfils the Office’s statutory obligation to maintain ahigh public awareness of the strategic transportationissues outlined in A Platform for Change.= The Office maintains an up-to-datecommunications strategy= DTO <strong>report</strong>s and research data are publishedon the website, at www.<strong>dto</strong>.ie= Public enquiries are made either by phoneor via the website. These are responded topromptly, within 48 hours where possible= The DTO operates a thorough and proactive mediastrategy – to ensure that the Office keeps thetransportation debate alive and well-informed= The DTO gives regular briefings, on general orspecific issues as appropriate, to members of thepolitical, business and academic communities.< Support for the Department of <strong>Transport</strong>The DTO executive also provides advice and information tothe Minister and Department of <strong>Transport</strong>, on a day-to-daybasis, including the preparation of material for significantnumbers of Parliamentary Questions, Ministerial briefings,<strong>report</strong>s and other Departmental information requests.< Dublin City CycleThe second <strong>annual</strong> Dublin City Cycle took place on theevening of Wednesday, July 19th, 2006. Over 4,000people, including families with children, took part in thisevent, which started and finished in Mayor Square, Dublin 1.It was organised by the DTO, Dublin City Council andthe Dublin Docklands Development <strong>Authority</strong>.At its September meeting, the Steering Committee agreedthat the Dublin City Cycle should be supported on an<strong>annual</strong> basis, and agreed to make co-funding available.< Sustainable Travel AwarenessIn May 2006, the Steering Committee established a WorkingGroup of Local <strong>Authority</strong> and Department representativesto determine how best to develop measures to promoteTravel Demand Management in the Greater Dublin Area.The Group met on a number of occasions, and <strong>report</strong>edback to the Steering Committee in October. The SteeringCommittee accepted the Group’s recommendation thatthe DTO executive should launch a public informationcampaign to raise awareness of sustainable traveland commuting choices, and the impacts of continuedcar-use. Tendering had commenced on this project byyear-end, and it is planned to launch the campaign in2007, and to measure its effectiveness in 2008.The Steering Committee also agreed with the WorkingGroup’s recommendation that agencies in the transportsector should develop their own Workplace TravelPlans, to demonstrate best practice to other employersin the region. The DTO developed its plan in 2006.< POLISPOLIS is a Brussels-based network of leading Europeancities and regions promoting the development ofinnovative technologies and policies for local transport.The DTO represents Dublin at POLIS, and chaired theTraffic Efficiency and Monitoring Group in 2006.page 25
