She hasa BA in sociology from Smith College, where she held a leadership position in the Student LaborAction Coalition. Her research focuses on the contingent labor market and urban poverty in theUnited States.Amy Schalet (Ph.D.) is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Reproductive Health Research andPolicy at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California at San Francisco. She received her Ph.D. in <strong>Sociology</strong> from the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, <strong>Berkeley</strong> in 2003 and her BA in Social Studies from Harvard <strong>University</strong>. Shespecializes in comparative cultural sociology and has researched family life, culture, and the welfarestate in the United States and the Netherlands.Ofer Sharone is a Ph.D. candidate in <strong>Sociology</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, <strong>Berkeley</strong>. He has aBA in economics from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois and a JD from Harvard Law School. He specializesin the sociology <strong>of</strong> work and researches overwork and unemployment in the United States andIsrael.Teresa Gowan (Ph.D.) is a Simon Research Fellow at the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sociology</strong> at the <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> Manchester in the United Kingdom. She received her Ph.D. in <strong>Sociology</strong> from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>California, <strong>Berkeley</strong> in 2003 and her BA in American Studies from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Manchester.She specializes in the comparative study <strong>of</strong> work and homelessness.Tom Medvetz is a Ph.D. candidate in <strong>Sociology</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> California, <strong>Berkeley</strong>. Hereceived an A.B. in English and <strong>Sociology</strong> from Franklin & Marshall College in 1998 and an M.A. in<strong>Sociology</strong> from <strong>Berkeley</strong> in 2000.
