<strong>Machine</strong> <strong>Translation</strong> <strong>Approaches</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> Languages 714.47 English to Assamese MT SystemAn English to Assamese MT system is in progress (Sudhir et al., 2007). The followingactivities are in progress in this direction.• The graphical user interface of the MT system has been re-designed. It now allows thedisplay of Assamese text. Modifications have been made in the Java modules.• The existing Susha encoding scheme has been used. In addition, a new Assamese fontset has been created according to that of Susha font set. The system is now able to displayproperly consonants, vowels, <strong>and</strong> matras of Assamese characters properly.• The mapping of the Assamese keyboard with that of Roman has been worked out.• The process of entering Assamese words (equivalent of English words) in the lexicaldatabase (nouns <strong>and</strong> verbs) is in progress.The system developed basically a rule-based approach <strong>and</strong> relies on a bilingual Englishto Assamese dictionary. The dictionary-supported generation of Assamese text from Englishtext is a major stage in this MT. Each entry in the dictionary is supplied with inflectionalin<strong>for</strong>mation about the English lexeme <strong>and</strong> all of its Assamese equivalents. The dictionary isannotated <strong>for</strong> morphological, syntactic, <strong>and</strong> partially semantic in<strong>for</strong>mation. It currently canh<strong>and</strong>le translation of simple sentences from English to Assamese. The dictionary containsaround 5000 root words. The system simply translates source language texts to thecorresponding target language texts phrase to phrase by means of the bilingual dictionarylookup.4.48 Tamil University MT SystemTamil University, Tanjore, initiated a machine oriented translation from Russian-Tamil during1983-1984 under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Dr. V.I Subramaniam (Sudhir et al., 2007).It was taken up as an experimental project to study <strong>and</strong> compare Tamil with Russian in orderto translate Russian scientific text into Tamil. A team consisting of a linguist, a Russianlanguage scholar, <strong>and</strong> a computer scientist were entrusted to work on this project. During thepreliminary survey, both Russian SL <strong>and</strong> Tamil were compared thoroughly <strong>for</strong> their style,syntax, morphological level, etc.4.49 Tamil-Malayalam MT SystemBharathidasan University, Tamilnadu, is working on translation between languages belongingto the same family, such as Tamil-Malayalam translation (Sudhir et al., 2007). The MTconsists of the following modules that are in progress.Lexical database- This will be a bilingual dictionary of root words. All the noun roots<strong>and</strong> verb roots are collected.
