He was cofounderof Washburn and MoenManufacturing (later American Steel andWire).His own lack of formal education madehim acutely aware of its importance.When approached by the residents of Topekato help save the ailing Lincoln College,Ichabod Washburn responded with a$25,000 gift. During the1937-38 school year, the editors of the KAW yearbookdecided that such items were important to the universityand began to accept suggestions for a design of Mr.Ichabod. The adopted design was drawn byBradbury Thompson (BA ’34).The following explanatory material accompaniedthe first representation of anIchabod in the KAW: “He has courageand enthusiasm as shown by his briskwalk. He is democratic andcourteous, for he tips his hatas he passes. Sincere in hissearch for truth and knowledge,he studiously carries abook under his arm. His friendlysmile makes you like him.
