Rochester Bishop MatthewClark presented the medal be<strong>for</strong>e more than700 guests at a special concert in Mr. Gladwell’shonor at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Choirsand musicians from several area churchesper<strong>for</strong>med musical selections, all favorites ofMr. Gladwell, and offi cials from <strong>WXXI</strong> and othercommunity organizations spoke highly abouthis accomplishments.After receiving requests from severaladmirers of Mr. Gladwell’s work, Bishop Clark—a longtime listener himself—wrote to PopeBenedict XVI to ask that the award be given toMr. Gladwell, whose program of Western sacredmusic has inspired and moved generations oflisteners locally and across the nation. In hispetition, the Bishop called Mr. Gladwell “a manof integrity” who brings “spiritual benefi t andbrightens Sundays” <strong>for</strong> many listeners everywhere.Pope Benedict, himself a musician andlover of music, was glad to comply with BishopClark’s request.“Never in my wildest dreams would I havethought that I would receive such a high honoras the prestigious Benemerenti Medal given tome by his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI,” saidMr. Gladwell. This award, coming to me in thetwilight of my years, reminds me that God movesin a mysterious way his wonders to per<strong>for</strong>m. Iam thankful <strong>for</strong> the chance to do what I havedone over the past 35 years, to bring His musicto the attention of the public.”The Benemerenti Medal was instituted byPope Gregory XVI in the early 19th Century andis conferred on those who have exhibited longand exceptional service to their community.
