NewsGwav Winter 2010Gwav Winter 2010NewsUp To DateWith cORNWALL’s CampaignsLeft: Horse Riding on the Tamar TrailsBelow: Autumn River CruiseThe Mayor ofSaltash AdamKilleya, has beenkeeping CornishStory updated onthe progress ofthe Keep CornwallWhole campaignthat we covered inthe Autumn issue. Here’s what he had to say:“The ‘Commons voted this evening against theamendment to protect Cornwall, although all6 Cornish MPs voted for it. We are naturallyvery disappointed by this result, but sadly notsurprised. We wll fight onwith the House of Lords and beyond until thefight is over. The fact that we have united allthe parties in Cornwall to fight this, and hadit debated at the highest levels is no meanachievement in itself, and we will build on this.Since the original story we have taken a dualapproach to the campaign - fighting one fight toraise awareness in Parliament, writing severalletters both to all MPs and to particular groupsMPs.The other fight has been in the media and thecourt of public opinion to raise awareness. Wehad a very successful rally in Saltash in Octoberwith around 500 protestors, speakers from ahuge range of political opinion(from MK to UKIP!) and excellent coverage. Infact press coverage has been very good overall- local, regional and national press, local andregional radiom and regional and naitonal TVincluding BBC2 daily politics last week. TheCornish MPs also got an audience to discuss itwith the PM last week (following on from KCW’strip to see the Deputy PM in September)It remains an uphill battle, but a very importantone to Cornwall.A Bountiful Autumn Tamar Trails FestivalIt was a vintage year for the annual AutumnTamar Trails Festival, with more than 40 fantasticevents taking place over the half-term. Therewas something on offer for all, including: autumnriver cruises, learning about food and medicinefound in our hedgerows, fire and bushcraft skillsand horse riding around the Tamar Trails networkin aid of charity, with Stoke Climsland & DistrictRiding Association.Several walks were organized through the TamarValley AONB. 'Walking the new Lifton Link'was an enormously popular event within thisautumn's Trails Festival. The Lifton Link is anewly promoted walking route which we havewaymarked this year to provide an off-roadalternative to the existing northern section ofthe Tamar Valley Discovery Trail. The new routehas been sponsored by Ambrosia, as they havea factory in Lifton; the route waymarking discscarry their logo, so it was appropriate that stafffrom the factory joined the inaugural walk alongthe route.Rosemary Teverson (Tamar Valley AONB ProjectManager) commented: 'We were blessed withbrilliant autumn sunshine and the effort ofclimbing several steepish slopes rewarded uswith outstanding views over farmland andwoodland with Launceston Castle and BodminMoor in the background.' The walk ended atKelly House with a warm welcome from theKelly family who provided a sit down tea in theirTudor kitchen, an excellent way to round off asuccessful walk. The event was oversubscribedso we will include a repeat in our Spring TrailFestival.12 Cornish Story MagazineCornish Story Magazine 13
