4x4 ® Pneumatic ActuatorWHY SMALLER IS BETTERThe Sharpe Pneumatic Actuator Series 4x4 ® packs more than doublethe torque of conventional rack and pinion actuators. Due to its fourpistons that generate torque around a centrally located pinion. Withmore pistons in the actuator, it allows their diameter to be smallerwhile generating higher torque. At the same time, it means the sizeof the actuator can be more compact.WHY SMALLER IS FASTERWith four small cylinders each located on one of four sides of theunit and at a given air pressure, the 4x4 ® produces the same torqueoutput as double piston models using smaller diameter pistons anda narrower pinion. Thanks to the narrower pinion, the pistons travelshorter distances so that they can move faster from one position tothe next.WHY SMALLER REDUCES AIR CONSUMPTIONThe cube shape coupled with pistons traveling shorter distancesminimizes size requirements while maximizing torque output. At thesame time, shorter piston travel and compact size greatly reducespressure requirements compared to other designs and results inreduced energy expenditures.WHY SMALLER MEANS LESS STRESSIt’s a matter of balance. Unlike other designs that produce anoff-axis thrust, the 4x4 ® design positions each piston around thecube so they develop thrust along their own axis. As a result, stressful piston side loading is minimized putting less stress on sealsresulting in less wear.WHY SMALLER IS A BETTER SOLUTIONBecause of the four-cylinder design, the 4x4 ® has many more springcombination possibilities than double piston actuators. This meansbetter solutions under any air pressure requirement. Each chambercan use up to three different spring sizes which nest between thecovers and pistons and align by centering rings. Also, springs arewound in opposite directions to avoid tangles during operation.WHY SMALLER IS STRONGERFor superior corrosion resistance, the body and covers areanodized internally and externally. Plus, they have an externalepoxy base layer and a second polyurethane paint to furtherreduce corrosion in demanding applications. Extended spraywash downs do not create corrosion problems for the actuator.9SHARPE ® PRODUCTS • TOLL FREE (877) 774-2773 • FAX (708) 562-9250 • www.sharpevalves.com
