ObituariesThe WVSMA remembers our esteemed colleagues…George Hamrick, <strong>MD</strong>Retired Charleston ophthalmologist Dr. GeorgeVincent Hamrick died at home on May 24 followinga long illness. He was 88. Born in Newburg on April23, 1924, George grew up in Frostburg, Md., the onlychild of the late Dr. Martin Elliott Hamrick and HazelWeaver Hamrick.He was a graduate of the University of Marylandand University of Maryland School of Medicine, andattended graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania.He served his internship at Mercy Hospitalin Pittsburgh, his general residency at SewickleyHospital in Sewickley, Pa., and his ophthalmologyresidency at Episcopal Eye, Ear, & Throat Hospitalin Washington, D.C. He was a general practitionerin Ambridge, Pa., in the early 1950s; he relocated toCharleston in March 1958, where he practiced ophthalmologyuntil his retirement in December 1988.He was a member of the American College of Surgeons;WV Academy of Ophthalmology (past president);American Academy of Ophthalmology; WV<strong>State</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Association</strong>; Kanawha <strong>Medical</strong> Society(past president); and the American <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Association</strong>.He was also a member of the Charleston LionsClub and First Presbyterian Church. A lifelong fan ofDixieland jazz, he was a founding member and pastpresident of the Charleston Dixieland Jazz Club.James Sexton, <strong>MD</strong>Dr. James “Jim” Kermit Sexton, 78, of Asheville,died May 30 at John F. Keever Solace Center. A nativeof Elkhorn City, KY, he was son of the late Kermit andRuby Owens Sexton.Always the advocate for education, Jim was agraduate of the University of Kentucky and BowmanGray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University.He began his medical career in Dunbar, WV, joiningthe family practice of Joseph A. Smith, <strong>MD</strong>. Dr.Sexton later served his residency in radiology atDuke University, before joining the staff of CharlestonArea <strong>Medical</strong> Center where he served a term asChief of Staff. As an Interventional Radiologist, Dr.Sexton was a partner in Associated Radiologists, Inc.of Charleston, WV.A wonderful husband, father and patriot, Jimloved his family and his country. For 26 years he wasa proud member of the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Air NationalGuard, where he loved and enjoyed the camaraderieof the 130th Tactical Airlift Group.
