A LANDOWNER’S GUIDE TO SELLING STANDING TIMBERRegeneration – young trees (noun) or <strong>the</strong> process ofgrowing young trees (verb):s The growth of young trees can be promoted throughnatural or artificial meanss Trees naturally regenerate by producing seeds or bycoppice growths People artificially regenerate forests by dispersingseeds, planting trees or stimulating coppice growthRemoval Cut – in <strong>the</strong> shelterwood silviculture system:s Mature trees are harvested after young trees areestablished below <strong>the</strong>ms Increases <strong>the</strong> growth and survival rates of young treesby providing full sunlightRiparian – areas adjacent <strong>to</strong> rivers and streamsidentified by vegetation, wildlife and o<strong>the</strong>r qualities unique<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se locations.Sawlog – a log of sufficient quality and size <strong>to</strong> be sawnin<strong>to</strong> lumber.ssbe planted with seedlings after <strong>the</strong> harvest or left <strong>to</strong>regenerate naturally.Selection – individual trees or groups of matureand/or unhealthy trees are harvested on a selectivebasis. A seed cut, removes about half of <strong>the</strong>large trees, leaving <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>to</strong> develop large crowns,which provide seeds and shade for regeneration.Subsequent cuts, called removal cuts, are conductedwhen saplings are well established beneath <strong>the</strong> maturetrees. By removing <strong>the</strong> mature trees, <strong>the</strong> final cutsprovide <strong>the</strong> new growth with sunlight and room<strong>to</strong> grow.Snag – a standing dead tree that is decaying. Canprovide habitat for many wildlife species and can be asafety hazard during logging operations.APPENDIX 4Seed Cut – in <strong>the</strong> shelterwood silviculture system:s Removes about half of <strong>the</strong> mature trees in a stand.s Creates space so that <strong>the</strong> remaining trees can developlarge crowns.s Trees with large crowns produce more seeds and <strong>the</strong>shade that many species need <strong>to</strong> germinate and grow.Silviculture – <strong>the</strong> science of growing trees.Silvicultural Systems:s Clearcut – all trees in a stand or portions of a standare removed at <strong>the</strong> same time. The clearcut area maySpecies – a group of plants, animals or o<strong>the</strong>r life formsthat can interbreed.Stand – a group of trees that can be distinguished fromo<strong>the</strong>r vegetation by its composition, age, arrangemen<strong>to</strong>r condition.S<strong>to</strong>cking – a relative measure of <strong>the</strong> quantity of trees ina stand. Can be expressed in terms of crown closure,number of trees, basal area or volume per hectare.55
