enable students to make up lost ground with suitable work and support. As aconsequence of this, the fact that a student moves up to the next grade inSeptember is not always an indicator of satisfactory achievement. Close contactwith teachers and careful study of reports will give an accurate picture. There are, however, occasions when a student may be made to repeat the year ifwe are convinced that this would actually be beneficial to the child concerned.Such a decision would be taken after full consultation with the parents and all theteachers involved. We discourage promotion that will involve ‘advancing’ a grade. This is onlypossible when a student has ability in all subject areas and is clearly outpacing allother students in class at such a rate that is it beneficial to move into a highergroup. In such cases the family will be responsible forboth appointing and financing this extra support.Students will be expected to show the relevant competences in English andMathematics, in the form of oral and written assessment, and Grade 6 teacherswill be consulted about all individual cases in good time during their final year ofElementary School. Students intending to follow the Middle School mainstreamItalian programme leading to the Italian licenza media exam will also be expectedto pass assessment tests in Italian.External students applying for entry to our Middle School will be required to takean entrance test in English and Mathematics and reports from the previous schoolwill be an important part of our assessment. Students accepted from Italianschools will usually be those with a good reason for wanting to continue theireducation in English (e.g. future plans to move to an Anglophone country, orthose recently returned from a period abroad). However, students who showstrong motivation to participate in an international education may be considered‘What we offer’ 2012 -‐ 2013 5
