for entry on the understanding, where relevant, that they are willing to undertakeat their own expense a private supplementary programme of English (notincluded in the <strong>school</strong> curriculum) to prepare for entry to the <strong>school</strong> and for aslong as the <strong>school</strong> considers it to be necessary in order to make up any linguisticdeficiencies. The <strong>school</strong> also offers the possibility of intensive English courses forany student who is academically able but whose level of English is not yet at therequired level. These lessons will take place within the normal <strong>school</strong> day but willbe subject to an additional fee from the parent.Grade 9 is an intense year didactically for many of our students, especially thosewho also want to take the Italian licenza media examination. More hours of Italianwill be guaranteed to ensure the best preparation possible, in addition to themainstream <strong>school</strong> curriculum. IAL (Italian as an Additional Language) studentswill follow a specially designed programme. At the same time, the English subjectteachers will be preparing the students for the greater responsibilities anddemanding courses of the High School. Grade 9 students wishing to progress into<strong>Rome</strong> International High School will be required to meet the relevant assessmentexpectations. These are: a minimum of 5 passes, at ‘C’ or above in the chosenGCSE/IGCSE subject areas. In addition, students will have fulfilled all behaviouraland attendance requirements. Any student who takes the Italian licenza mediaexamination and does not pass will be denied entrance to the High School.• The Transition from Middle to High School (Grades 9 to 10)All internal and external students applying for entrance to our High School willalso be expected to pass an entrance exam in English and Mathematics, whichwill be assessed exclusively by the relevant specialist teachers. These teachers’comments concerning individual performance in the test and their subsequentprofessional opinion of the applicant’s suitability to follow our programmes, will berecorded on the relevant recommendation form. If either the English or Mathsreports are negative, the candidate cannot be admitted to <strong>Rome</strong> InternationalSchool. There can be no exception to this rule. Applicants will also be required tohave an oral interview with the Principal and/or Middle or High School Leader,GCSE or IB Diploma Programme Co-ordinator.If a student is seen to have good academic potential but has obvious weaknessesin his/her English language skills, there is still the possibility of being accepted tothe High School under the following conditions:• That he/she will have extra English support during and after <strong>school</strong> hours,at the personal expense of the family; and• That he/she may be put on a waiting list and accepted only if the class isnot full and that extra help in the language would be given with the sameconditions as above.‘What we offer’ <strong>2012</strong> -­‐ <strong>2013</strong> 6
