Announcements Page 3Greetings! I have just returned home from Pennsic XL, the first Pennsic I have had the pleasure to attend. There was no way to talk directly to the11,000+ people in attendance, so this missive is an attempt to communicate out to more participants.Several Directors, Corporate Officers and Society Officers held a Meet „n Greet at Pennsic and many of the topics and questions raised were related tocommunications, both to and from the corporate and society levels. In our current information age of instant and abundant communication options, thepressure placed upon volunteers to meet the „information demand‟ is great. No single communication method can reach all the participants in our organization,however, compounding the difficulty. Some members may not read the kingdom newsletters, some have no access to the Internet, and others wantthe personal touch of phone or in-person communications. We are committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for face-to-face communications,with Meet‟n Greets at major wars, attendance at as many local events as possible, and the quarterly public Board meetings. We urge you to attendthe Board meetings, seek out Board members at local events and major wars, and email, phone or write your Ombudsman with any concerns you mayhave. We‟ll do our best to respond to all your correspondence in a reasonable amount of time.I‟d like to address a couple of issues that were discussed at the Pennsic Meet „n Greet. The move to electronic newsletters was primarily a business decisionmade to ensure the fiscal solvency of the SCA as an organization. The decision to retain an option for paper newsletters for those who wish it wasmade specifically so that those who do not have readily available Internet access or who choose not to get their information that way can still be informed.As the number of newsletters printed on paper diminishes, the cost per printed copy increases, so consolidating the printing of the hardcopy newslettersto gain the largest possible copy count is the best option financially. That does require that all hardcopy newsletters follow a set physical format,with the content specific to each Kingdom. Kingdom Chroniclers will continue to have a vital role in ensuring that correct information is communicated outto their Kingdoms, whether it be electronically or hardcopy.The SCA Census that was taken last year was a concerted effort by the Board, Society and Corporate Officers to gather information and communicationfrom the participants in the SCA on a wide range of topics related to our organization. The purpose of the census data is to provide the Society and Corporatelevels the ability to be responsive to the participants as we navigate through a difficult economy in our external, modern society. I‟d like to express theBoard‟s deep appreciation for the volunteers on the Census Committee. The Census Committee is a group of volunteers that have committed hundreds ofhours of their time to develop the census, and now, to extract and validate the data so that the most relevant and usable information is available to all ofus. The Committee‟s goal is to release, upon the Board‟s approval, validated sets of data each quarter. Gathering the data is the first step, interpretingand utilizing that data to make the best decisions for the organization as a whole is the next challenge. Any and all input from participants regarding thetopics contained within the census is critical to this process.I listened to many opinions while I was at Pennsic, as I (and the rest of the Board) do at all events/gatherings/fighter practices we attend. We all want tohear your opinions, in person or through Comments@sca.org; or through email or letters to Officers and/or Ombudsmen. We are participants in the SCAas well as volunteers for the administration and stewardship of our organization, and we look forward to hearing from everyone. Mr. Hughes writes:The position of Society Marshal will soon be open. If you are interested in applying for the position, you must apply in writing to the Board of Directors. Society Seneschal and Vice President of Operations. The Board of Directors is accepting applications for the position of Society Seneschal(Vice-President for Operations). This is a part-time, paid position, which requires approximately thirty-two hours per week .As this position is responsible forthe operational aspects of the SCA, a solid knowledge of our administration, procedures, and governing documents is required.The Society Seneschal deals with large amounts of correspondence (electronic, written and telephone) with all kingdom seneschals, royalty, and corporatelevel offices, especially the Registrar (Vice-President for Corporate Operations) and the Executive Assistant to the Board of Directors. Applicants must beavailable for the four quarterly Board Discussion Sessions per year (typically held on Fridays), held in addition to the four Board meeting days per year(typically on Saturdays). As Thursdays and Sundays tend to be travel days, each applicant must have sixteen days available per year, of which eight areweek days. Additional traveling may be required. Availability for up to eight evening conference calls per year (generally starting at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time)is also required. The successful candidate will plan, organize, attend, and facilitate a bi-annual Kingdom Seneschal's symposium.The successful candidate will make 4 to 8 short-notice trips over weekends to conduct problem-solving activities at Wars or Kingdom events. Games Page 10Nyout, much like Mancala has been around so long it’s hard document where it started. It’s very similarto Pachisi and the details of play vary by region and time period. There is some evidence it was played BC inIndia, but I found it hard to tell where Pachisi ended and Nyout began. The version of the rules here is quitesimple and allows only two players. Using short cuts is not required.If a horse taking a shortcut through the circle ends up on the opposite side of the circle withmovement still to do, the horse must run counter-clockwise and finish out its movement.If a player lands on a circle that an opponent’s horse is on they get “kicked” off that square andhave to begin from start againIf a player lands on a circle that one other of their own horses is on they can join them together amove them as one piece - but if they get kicked off a square both of your pieces have to goback to the start.FinishingThe finish is the large circle next to the start circleAn exact throw is not required to bear a horse off the board. If theseitems stay in her possession then Council should decide if the Chronicler owes the Exchequer a total of $8.00 ($2.00 for bumpersticker, $6.00 for manual). Our regular monthly businessmeeting was held at Jacinda's house on 7/22 with 8 members attending. Our next meeting will be on 8/26 and include a social at7pm, at Sunshine Pizza in St. Helens. We have a new balance of $1,644.54 being held for us by the Barony of 3M. This includes theincome from the Champions event of $408.01. Embellisher's class has found a site after much discussion with the Schools. Theyhave agreed to discount our rate dramatically and it things are progressing well towards a Mid-Febuary 2012 Academia event. Wehave finished our largesse projects after a recent well-attended work day, and will deliver to Sport of Kings. The Incipient Canton of Hauksgardr held our lastmeeting on the 4 th of August at the Charburger Restaurant in Hood River. We had 22 people attend our meeting in preparation forour August in the Park demo held on the 6 th . We had 42 people attend our demo and sign in at gate. Many moderns were attractedto our two tournaments during the day, and many discussions of the Arts & Sciences of the Middle Ages were had. We have severalnewcomers that have joined our list, and they are eager to find out more about the SCA. We held fighter practice on the 13 th with twoarmored fighters, and eight members of the populace coming out to watch and socialize. Everyone had a great time. We have anotherDemo scheduled at the Farmer‟s Market in The Dalles on October 8 th , and would dearly love to have more help if anyone cancome and assist! Three entries and a hand written letter ofintent are required. Registration for single entries will be accepted by email until September 15. There was much rejoicing. The Canton is also planning on hosting a Grand Embelleshers'Accademia Session to be held on Feb 18-19, 2012. This two day event will be held at Scappoose High School. Future paint nights will be held every other weekon Wednesdays at 6pm at Leah and Randal‟s house. In Septemberthere will be a free class on how to make a scroll from start to finish. The class will be Sept. 10 and 17 starting at 10 am. Thisis a two day intensive hands on class that will cover layout design text color selection and gold leafing as well as any other topic thatcomes up, There is space for 3 more people and each participant will receive a scroll assignment to be completed by them. We haven't had any measurable rain for three weeks, so it*must* be summer . . . right? It has been a moderately busy month. The quarterly report was turned in on time, thanks to the conscientiouswork of Rebecca and Alexandria. There have been three email contacts (two of them from North Portland; we're developingquite a little nest of SCA up there), and the other one a father-and-son twofer who will be attending Sport of Kings. I enjoyed a day inCascade Locks at the demo put on by the Canton of Hauksgaard, where I spoke with several members of the public; there was a nicechat with a mom and her young son at the August Social Night, who were introduced to Sable; and we pulled off a successful demofor the Boy Scout's Ranger Quest program at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum last Friday. I haven't had the opportunity tospeak with the organizer who requested us -- she was there *all week,* so she may be on a much-needed vacation -- but the Scoutswere eager, attentive, and loved being involved. There were 13 SCA there, including the Knight Marshall for Terra Pomaria; excellent,I think, for a demo on a weekday, in the summer, at such a distance. Your Excellencies and good Nobles-Your Chirurgeon has no activities (officially) to report, howevershe was informed of an incident that occurred at Dragon's Mist Defenders related to a rather sudden allergic reaction. This is areminder that these kinds of things can come on quite suddenly, and need to be taken care of right away, even if you haven't had asevere allergic reaction in the past- if you start having trouble breathing, or notice swelling, please go to the chirurgeon immediately.Likewise, if you've had a more serious allergic reaction in the past, you should have an epipen from your doctor, and tell everyonearound you where you have it stored- hopefully someplace quickly accessible. Hopefully we'll all enjoy a safe and pleasant summerbutit's always best to be prepared. Greetings, Planning forHonor Feast and A&S Championship continues apace. Decorations are being created, Activities are being planned and fantastic foodis being crafted. The feast will be in a format I don't believe we've ever had before and I think it will be very fun: there will be no placesettings, no waiting at your table for the next course to be served. Don‟t bring your feast gear, you won‟t need it and there won't be aplace to set it out. Just bring a drinking vessel and your own drinks. Everything else really will be provided on site. All the food will beserved dim sum style at 10:30, 1, 3:30 and 6pm with dessert at 7pm. Each remove will be from a different region of the world – Aseach remove is served, people will go to the kitchen and select the dishes they want to eat. When you‟re done eating, take the dishesback to the kitchen, we‟ll wash them and have them ready for the next remove.
