Thanks tothem, families can put food on their tables, both <strong>in</strong> ourregion and <strong>in</strong> the neediest regions of the world. Low-<strong>in</strong>comestudents experience excursions that spark discovery outsidethe classroom. Residents benefit from green build<strong>in</strong>gprograms, and children and elders <strong>in</strong> a ra<strong>in</strong> forest half a worldaway learn about protect<strong>in</strong>g their own fragile ecosystem.Because each person’s giv<strong>in</strong>g goals are unique, we offer avariety of giv<strong>in</strong>g vehicles: donor advised funds that maximizetax benefits and allow great flexibility <strong>in</strong> distribut<strong>in</strong>g grants,field of <strong>in</strong>terest funds that support specific causes, scholarshipfunds to support students, gifts of real estate, funds based onestate plann<strong>in</strong>g and much more.Donors turn to us for expertise <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g the causes thatmean the most to them. We currently work with 39 corporations,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Adobe, Cisco, eBay, Electronic Arts, McAfee,Microsoft, NVIDIA and Shutterfly. We’re here to helpthem meet their social responsibility goals and create theirown brands of philanthropy, whether they want f<strong>in</strong>ancialtransaction services or help digg<strong>in</strong>g deep for <strong>in</strong>formationand strategic th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.Through one partnership, NVIDIA’s employee-led foundationraised money that will feed 300 children every weekend for thenext three years. After we helped Shutterfly develop a visionand mission <strong>in</strong> 2007, the company awarded $120,000 <strong>in</strong> grantsto 12 organizations focused on children’s education and familyissues. “Applied Materials’ grantmak<strong>in</strong>g has become even moreimpactful and <strong>in</strong>formed as a result of tapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the expertiseof <strong>Silicon</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> Foundation’s staff and their broadknowledge of issues, organizations and compell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestmentopportunities <strong>in</strong> the region,” says Siobhan Kenney, of thecompany’s Global Affairs team.Because need exists <strong>in</strong> communities far beyond <strong>Silicon</strong><strong>Valley</strong> and because our donors want to help, we havestreaml<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>ternational grantmak<strong>in</strong>g through partnershipswith organizations such as Give2Asia. Each of the five pools is carefully constructedand diversified across global <strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities tomaximize return and m<strong>in</strong>imize volatility. Also, <strong>in</strong> 2008 wereviewed each fund’s activity and worked with advisors to align<strong>in</strong>vestments with their philanthropic goals and time horizons.As an <strong>in</strong>formation resource and <strong>in</strong> the spirit of transparency,we released Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Common Good <strong>in</strong> fall 2008. Thisreport offers detailed f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>formation, an overview ofour <strong>in</strong>vestment portfolio and a report on our first <strong>in</strong>dependentaudit. Moss Adams LLP, a lead<strong>in</strong>g national account<strong>in</strong>g firmwith extensive nonprofit experience, performed the audit, andthe results speak to the successful, unprecedented transitionof two complex community foundations <strong>in</strong>to one of thenation’s largest.We will cont<strong>in</strong>ue provid<strong>in</strong>g detailed, timely f<strong>in</strong>ancial<strong>in</strong>formation for our family of donors, nonprofits andprofessional advisors. But we’re not through the storm yet.
