WOW WordsWOW words are a monthly vocabulary assignment. The goal of this assignment is toimprove your vocabulary, demonstrate an understanding of <strong>the</strong> parts of speech, andpractice dictionary skills.Every day, <strong>the</strong>re will be a new Word of Wisdom (WOW) posted on <strong>the</strong> board. It isyour daily job to record this word on your WOW Words rough draft <strong>sheet</strong>. Foreach word you must do <strong>the</strong> following: Use a classroom dictionary to find <strong>the</strong> word’s part of speech & <strong>the</strong> correctdefinition of <strong>the</strong> word (if <strong>the</strong> word has more than one meaning, just chooseone). Please make sure that your definition matches <strong>the</strong> part of speech thatyou listed. Use <strong>the</strong> word in an original sentence and underline <strong>the</strong> word (The sentencemust show that you understand <strong>the</strong> meaning of <strong>the</strong> word). Your sentenceshould match <strong>the</strong> definition and part of speech you have listed.o Example:• Stupendous – She is stupendous! (WRONG WAY)• Stupendous – I love visiting my Grandma’s house because hercooking is stupendous! (RIGHT WAY) This should all be recorded on <strong>the</strong> rough draft <strong>sheet</strong>. This is your daily workat <strong>the</strong> start of language arts class. BE AWARE – There will be someunannounced WOW word checks… if you are not up-to-date with your WOWwords you will lose points on your language arts grade, and you may need toattend some working lunch sessions to catch up. In addition, each month you will get a comprehension work<strong>sheet</strong>. You will use<strong>the</strong> ten WOW Words for <strong>the</strong> month to fill in <strong>the</strong> appropriate blanks. Ifwords are spelled incorrectly you will be lose points. If you lose yourcomprehension work<strong>sheet</strong>, extra copies can be found on Mr. Scholl’s webpagein <strong>the</strong> language arts section.http://www.eastpennsd.org/teacherpages/gscholl/


WOW Words are always due <strong>the</strong> last school day of each month. By <strong>the</strong> due date,you will need to hand in a good copy of your WOW words. Your good copy needs tohave <strong>the</strong> WOW Words placed in alphabetical order. All words in <strong>the</strong> sentencesshould be spelled correctly and proper grammar should be used. There are only10 words each month. The good copy MUST BE TYPED. If you do not have acomputer at home you can type it at school. There are computers in <strong>the</strong> librarythat you can use during 9 th periods.If you do not have a printer at home you have 2 options:1. Email <strong>the</strong> document to gscholl@eastpennsd.org by <strong>the</strong> due datea. Please DO NOT send your WOW Words in <strong>the</strong> body of an email. Itneeds to be an attachment from a word processing program.2. Use <strong>the</strong> drop box on my website (you will need to ask for <strong>the</strong> login & PW)(www.eastpennsd.org/teacherpages/gscholl)NOTE: Don’t wait until <strong>the</strong> last minute. If I do not have your good copy in my emailor my drop box, it will not count as a completed assignment. Telling me that yousent it, <strong>the</strong>refore I should have it, is not an acceptable excuse.You can receive extra credit points for this assignment by:o adding a new, challenging word of your own (it should be a word youdidn’t know before). This word can be added at <strong>the</strong> end OR inalphabetical order with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> words. You need to mark itsomehow to show that it is your bonus word.IMPORTANT REMINDERS You must do <strong>the</strong> word of <strong>the</strong> day on <strong>the</strong> rough copy <strong>sheet</strong> EVERY DAY Make sure you use <strong>the</strong> correct definition Don’t forget <strong>the</strong> part of speech Your original sentence must match <strong>the</strong> definition you give Your original sentence must show that you understand <strong>the</strong> meaning of <strong>the</strong>word Underline <strong>the</strong> WOW word in your original sentence BE AWARE of unannounced WOW Word checks Good copy must be typed Good copy must have words in alphabetical order Check your spelling and grammar (proofread) Good copy must be handed in on time Don’t forget to do <strong>the</strong> comprehension page and staple it to your good copy.
