to organizing a shooting sports club. A total of six manuals have been prepared for use in thisprogram. These manuals have been developed specifically for Florida from the 4-H NationalCurriculum that is provided to Level 2 trainers. These manuals are not posted on the EDIS systemand are only available by attending a certification training. The National 4-H Curriculum is theestablished and accepted model for teaching 4-H youth. Curriculum, certification, and training byother organizations are a welcome supplement but cannot replace the 4-H curriculum. During theLevel 1 training sessions, several Power Point presentations have been developed and are used tosupplement the manuals in the areas of life skills, risk management, roles and responsibilities of the4-H leader. Several of these presentations are available online for volunteers to review as part of acertification training. In addition, a document titled “Shooting Sports State Plan and Guidelines” isposted on the State 4-H website. This provides information related to instructor certification, agerequirements, program objectives, equipment and other resources.Number of professional presentationsMultiple Level 1 training events are scheduled annually depending on district demand. Typically sixto ten Level 1 certification training sessions are offered each year with one State training scheduledthat offers all disciplines. These sessions are typically taught by a combination of instructorsincluding county faculty and volunteers.Outcomes and ImpactsVolunteers trained and recertified annually ranges from 125-175. The number of youth currentlyenrolled in the Florida 4-H Shooting Sports Programs exceeds 3,600. Events held annually andsponsored by the State Committee include ten state matches, the certification trainings mentionedabove, a five day residential camp, a National Invitational Event and several regional activities.Program evaluation for the Level 1 training sessions is completed via a pre/post test administered tothe volunteer participants. Typically, 95% plus of the participants indicate a knowledge and skillgain. Current assessment of youth participants in shooting sports programs indicate significantincreases in knowledge and skills related to their chosen discipline. Life skill development is alsoenhanced especially in the areas of leadership and decision making. Several other research studies onshooting sports from other states have been completed and indicate critical strengths in the areas ofreinforcing family relationships, citizenship skills, strengthening personal and social competence, promoting sportsmanship and ethical behavior, willingness to help others and the development oflifelong recreational pursuits. Annual demographic information is collected from the ES237 reportand submitted to the National Shooting Sports Program. The overwhelming evidence here suggeststhat this program recruits a large number of male volunteers to the 4-H program and retains the olderyouth participants. Both of these demographic groups are typically lower in other 4-H programsmaking the 4-H Shooting Sports program an important recruitment avenue for these individuals.Title for Program 2: Children Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR)SituationChildren, Youth and Families at Risk (CYFAR) (2004-present)32
