It is like a mustard seed . . . ”Mark 4:30-32The <strong>Mustard</strong> <strong>Seed</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> is a Christian family foundation establishedin 1983 under the leadership of Dennis W. Bakke and Eileen HarveyBakke. The <strong>Foundation</strong> was created as an expression of their desireto be faithful stewards of the financial resources entrusted to them, tobring together the Christian members of their extended families intocommon ministry, and to advance the Kingdom of God. The <strong>Foundation</strong>provides grants to churches and Christian organizations worldwide thatare engaged in Christian ministries including outreach, discipleship,and economic empowerment. The <strong>Foundation</strong> also awards scholarshipsto Christians pursuing advanced educational degrees in preparationfor leadership roles in both the Church and society. All directors andstaff of the <strong>Mustard</strong> <strong>Seed</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> are committed followers of JesusChrist. The <strong>Foundation</strong> affirms the Lausanne Covenant as its missionalcommitment to the world.
Dear Friends of the <strong>Mustard</strong> <strong>Seed</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>,This year <strong>Mustard</strong> <strong>Seed</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> is 25 years old.We remember and celebrate those special years of God’sfaithfulness in leading the <strong>Foundation</strong>.In 1982 we had been married just over a year. Dennishad recently co-founded AES, a fledgling electricitygeneration company. While driving to West Virginia fora weekend getaway, God spoke to our hearts. He gaveus the idea that someday (presumably when and if wehad some extra funds), we could steward our financialresources through a family foundation that would givemoney to Christ-centered organizations, churches, andindividuals engaged in ministry. This dream constituted abig part of our conversation during the weekend, but nodefinitive plans were made, or strategy designed.In November we traveled to Chicago to celebrateThanksgiving with several members of the Bakke family.On an early morning walk to the local coffee shop withhis father Tollef and brother Ray, Dennis shared the visionGod had given earlier that fall to form a family foundationat some point in the future.Ray suggested we start a foundation immediately,even if it was done with only a few thousand dollars. Thebrainstorming continued during Thanksgiving dinner andthe outline of a foundation was born. It was an amazingThanksgiving, but we still had little idea how God wouldshape this new organization and provide funding to fulfillour dreams and plans.We incorporated the <strong>Foundation</strong> in 1983. In 1984we gave five grants totaling $11,600, an average of lessthan $3,000 per grant. We chose the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s namefrom Jesus’ parable about how God can do mighty thingswith a mustard seed of faith; we prayed that God wouldbless and multiply our few small grants. Even today, ourgrants to churches around the world average just over$5,000—mustard seeds. During those early years, thegrants were developed by family Board members andsent to Eileen for processing, often among diapers andbabies on the floor or the foot of our bed.We were blessed when Craig Nauta, another familymember, became the first staff member and director ofthe <strong>Foundation</strong> in 1990. For 13 years he recruited andled a small band of dedicated and talented staffers as weshaped the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s giving strategies and expandedthe global reach of our granting. In 2001 we addedour first international staff member in Mumbai, India.Today we have 11 staff serving in seven countries. The<strong>Foundation</strong> is fortunate to have seasoned, professionalstaff members who have served for many years. Ourcurrent Executive Directors, Eric Hornberger and LonniJackson, have served on the <strong>Foundation</strong> staff for tenyears each. Other family members, Scott Bakke andBrian Bakke, have been members of the staff for nearlya decade.Since early in our history, the core of <strong>Mustard</strong> <strong>Seed</strong>’sgiving has been small grants to churches, mostly in thedeveloping world, to support their discipleship, outreach,church planting, and empowerment programs. We havefound that giving small startup grants to churches,matching the funding they provide for ministry projects,empowers the mission of churches and roots accountabilityfor the project’s success in that community. In the pastquarter century, we have given 5,622 grants to churchesand other organizations in 144 nations. Today churchbasedgranting continues to represent about 50% of ourannual operating budget.In 1992 we started the Harvey Fellows program toassist talented graduate students headed for careers,such as university teaching positions, and other callingsCELEBRATING 25 YEARS 1
