Latin America andthe CaribbeanLatin America presents divergent trendsregarding the value of the market system andits ability to sustain democratic institutions. InBolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela,populist messages continue to resonate. Still, muchof Latin America has not turned away from thepath of market reform, resulting in largely positiveoutcomes in terms of economic growth. But evenin those countries, progress is often held backby corruption and high levels of informality thatprevent the poorest in society from benefiting fromeconomic growth. CIPE’s strategy in the regionis to promote the development of strong, privatesector institutions with the ability to participatein and improve democratic governance. CIPEworks with the business community and economicpolicy institutes to forge consensus and addressproblems of inequity and the informal sector. CIPEpartners advance reform through legislative advisoryprograms, strengthening corporate governance andfiscal management, and improving public debate oneconomic issues.In Guatemala,CIEN providesentrepreneurs inthe informal sectorwith the skillsand knowledgeto formalize theirbusinesses.Latin America and the CaribbeanThese featured programs demonstratejust some of the impact CIPE has hadin Latin America and the Caribbean.For a full list, please see page 37.31
