F<strong>in</strong>d out more about:Mediation Projects | Mediation SupportPress statementFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEDatel<strong>in</strong>e Geneva, Switzerland28 September 2010<strong>Clans</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>end</strong> <strong>conflicts</strong> <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>danaoClan leaders resolved two major <strong>conflicts</strong> on the M<strong>in</strong>danao island of Sulu <strong>in</strong>the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es last week dur<strong>in</strong>g a two-day conference on violence and familyfeuds.Twenty participants, represent<strong>in</strong>g more than 15 clans, also signed a <strong>jo<strong>in</strong></strong>tdeclaration agree<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> promote peace through dialogue.They also committed <strong>to</strong> settle <strong>conflicts</strong>, and help others do so, by act<strong>in</strong>g as atrusted third party.“We asked clan representatives <strong>to</strong> take advantage of this gather<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> resolve<strong>conflicts</strong> they want <strong>to</strong> <strong>end</strong>.” said David Gorman, the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Humanitarian</strong>Dialogue representative <strong>in</strong> the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, when talk<strong>in</strong>g about the his<strong>to</strong>ricmoment recorded on video.“Without a resolution of clan <strong>conflicts</strong>, political violence andunderdevelopment will not <strong>end</strong>.” he added.While Sulu is more widely known as a stronghold of terrorism and kidnapp<strong>in</strong>g,violence on the island largely stems from clan <strong>conflicts</strong>. In the last twomonths, more than 30 civilians have been killed <strong>in</strong> violent clan-related<strong>conflicts</strong> <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce.The conference was organised by the Office of the Mufti of Sulu (the Islamicleadership <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce) and the <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Humanitarian</strong> Dialogue (the HD<strong>Centre</strong>), an <strong>in</strong>dep<strong>end</strong>ent mediation organisation.
