Manly Selective CampusAcademic Excellence Personal BestGiving Back to the CommunityPrincipal:Mr David TomlinDeputy Principals:Ms Meg TulkMs Josie O'Donnell4 June 2010 – Newsletter No 16FROM THE PRINCIPALBeauty and the Beast – at the time of writing weare half way through the season of this year’smusical. In the tradition of our school, theproduction this year is nothing short ofspectacular. The nature of the musical is differentto previous years but the enthusiasm andexcitement is just as great. All of the work that hasgone into the rehearsals of the last few weeks, especially the long weekends in the hall, the setdesign and creation, the outstanding costumes andthe lighting and sound design have come togetherinto a magnificent spectacle showcasing our verytalented and dedicated students. The audienceshave been ecstatic as they emerged from the hall, and that has not only been just proud parents andfamilies. The student cast of 15, the chorus of 51,the orchestra of 16 and the crew of 31 show thegreatest team spirit possible. The parents whodevoted so much of their time at weekends and athome with costumes, sets and food help make thisa wonderful example of a community workingtogether. Of course the staff are the mainstaysbehind everything that happens. Marisa Carolanhas given vision and direction to everyone with herinimitable style, Lucienne Howard has been amagnificent first time musical director assisted byElissa Cranston (both helping with their first ManlyCampus production), Chris Shea has mastered thestage and technical direction, Angela Richards hastransformed the hall with her outstanding sets andJudy Boylan has led a keen and dedicated team ofparents in the most elaborate and exotic costumeswe have seen. Donna Colby helped choreographprofessional drama coach, Stephen Rutherfordused his skills with photography and publicity,Yoko Ichikawa helped with make up, Russel Burns(with parent Ross Pagett) helped with setconstruction and Josie O’Donnell has beenwonderful in catering and general support. Theoffice staff must be thanked also for theirexpertise in organising the box office. There aremany others who have helped in so many ways. Itis once again an event that confirms the pride wehave in our school.Ashleigh Rubenach was heard to say in the backoffices during the performance, “I just love thisschool!” That says it all.Jacaranda Concert Program – I was privileged thisweek to enjoy this performance as part of TheFestival of Instrumental Music conducted by theArts Unit of the NSW Department of Education atthe Opera House. Of special note was the duetperformance by Noam Yaffe (Year 8) and his friendHarry Ward. They were stunning in their playing ofShostakovich’s Preludium, Three Duets for Violin, avery challenging piece. This was an exceptionalexperience for an exceptional student. As well, playing trumpet in the NSW Public School StateSenior Wind Band was James Power (Year 10)reinforcing the depth of musical talent in ourschool. The evening was just one of a series ofnights showcasing NSW public schools.Sport Star – the full results of the Zone AthleticsCarnival will be printed soon but a special notemust be made of Kate Hobbs (Year 10) who hasblitzed the whole carnival. Competing in the U15s(assisted by students), Neda Joyce was a___________________________________________________________________________________Manly Selective Campus138 Abbott Road, North Curl Curl NSW 2099Phone: 9905 3982 / Fax: 9905 7772Email: nbscmanlys‐h.school@det.nsw.edu.auP&C website: www.manlypandc.org.au
