GDF SUEZ CCS Corporate Program –activities and experiencesPolish Science for FP7 Seminar“Sustainable Energy andEfficient Use of Energy Resources”Embassy of PolandBrussels, 25 th March 2010Marc De Witte, Vice President Research & Innovation

GDF SUEZ : a world leader in energy►€79.9 billion in 2009 revenues► €20.6 billion net invested over 2008 - 2009► A balanced Power Generation mixPower generation by zoneGeneration capacity by fuel2

A balanced fuel mix is a necessity for CompetitiveElectricity Generation with low CO 2 emissionsSource: PricewaterhouseCoopersCO 2 emissions of electricity producers3

The challengesCompetitivenessSecurity of supplyEnvironmental impactNeed for balanced energy mix, where gas and coal will continue toplay essential role during next decadesNeed for high efficient fossil fuel technology with low climateimpactCCS is part of solution5

CO2 injection & storage in Altmark (DE) - pilotPartners: « CLEAN » project, GDF SUEZ – DEP, Vattenfall, CO 2 captured in the Vattenfalloxyfuel pilot project in Schwarze Pumpe (start 09/2008)ALTMARK GAS FIELD• Objective of the pilot phase is to evaluate:‣ Technical and economic feasibility of CO 2 injection‣ Long-term integrity of the storage• Ongoing work concerns construction and permit request.• Successful implementation of the pilot project may pave the way for a large-scalecommercial CO 2 sequestration projectSouthern edge of Northeast German BasinThe second largest onshore gas field inEuropeThe biggest potential site for CO 2 storageto be brought to market in Europe on ashort-term basis Significant CO 2 storage potential :up to 0,5 Gt9 9

Electrabel / E.ON - “ROAD” large demonstratorTransportationGDF Suez E&P Nederland is preferred sub contractor for the pipeline 16” pipeline (4 km onshore and 21 km offshore) Transport capacity is 5 Mton/yr (dense CO 2 ) Pipeline design:• Operating pressure 20 – 150 bar• Operating temperature 20 – 110 °CEEPR proposal Rotterdam12

StorageTAQA is preferred sub contractor for storage.Storage capacity in the P18/A field estimated at ~ 25 MtonFields at a depth of 3500 mOriginal pressure 350 bar, pressureafter gas production estimated 30 barNo EGR foreseenElectrabel / E.ON - “ROAD” large demonstratorEEPR proposal Rotterdam13

Success factors and financial considerationsCritical success factors for large scale use of CCS► Legislation: CCS Directive offers adequate framework - MS must provideclear rules but should avoid excessive burden► Public interest and support► Adequate transport infrastructure : joint public private initiatives will benecessary► Suitable geological conditions for CO 2 storage► Economic feasibility - a sound busines case : EU-ETS should becomemajor driver : CO 2 market price must increase while energy penalty shoulddecrease► Imposing emission performance limits or mandating CCS is not appropriate14

CONCLUSIONS► CCS is promising technology to contribute to combat climate change► GDF SUEZ will continue its efforts in R&D and pilot projects in order toassess and improve technical and economic feasibility of CCS, and inparticular to lower energy penalty► Demo projects are necessary to test technologies at industrial scale: GDFSUEZ welcomes EU and MS initiatives and is assessing at present itspossibilities to participate in demo program► GDF SUEZ is committed to assess feasibility of CCS for its new fossilfuels fired power plants and to take adequate measures (capturereadiness) if appropriateIndustry is willing to develop and implement CCS as acritical carbon mitigation technology if all requirementsare fulfilled15
