Specialist High Skills Major and Focus Programs<br />

Green Learning<br />

SHSM Sector: Environment<br />

Nepean High <strong>School</strong> SHSM<br />

Businesses and governments are looking for new and innovative<br />

solutions to a myriad of issues, such as climate change, natural<br />

resource depletion, air and water pollution, waste management,<br />

and loss of biodiversity. This program will provide students with an<br />

opportunity to become participants in helping to provide solutions to<br />

some of these local and provincial issues. The program focuses on<br />

environmental protection and stewardship as it relates to renewable<br />

energy, sustainable societies, and the conservation and preservation<br />

of the natural world. Experiential learning opportunities include field<br />

ecology, habitat restoration, environmental impact studies of terrestrial<br />

and aquatic ecosystems. Students will also learn how to use<br />

technology in their decision making (e.g., GPS, GIS, Arc View) and<br />

data to model future scenarios.<br />

Landscape and Design<br />

Bell High <strong>School</strong> Focus<br />

Students will focus on design, construction, and maintenance<br />

relating to the landscaping industry. Students will work with their<br />

teacher and landscape companies in a cooperative environment to<br />

plan, design, and construct outdoor spaces for schools, residential,<br />

and commercial sites. Students will learn to use hand-and-power<br />

tools appropriate to construction projects. Through a variety of<br />

in-class and on-site projects, students will learn the fundamentals<br />

of landscape design, the art of working with interlocking stone, and<br />

the essentials of creating and installing retaining walls. In addition,<br />

students will learn how to install water features in landscaping<br />

projects. The program will also include the study of plant and tree<br />

species and their use in landscape design. Instruction will take place<br />

in the greenhouse, classroom, and through projects undertaken in<br />

the community.<br />

Precision Engineering and Fabrication<br />

SHSM Sector: Manufacturing<br />

Hillcrest High <strong>School</strong> SHSM<br />

Students have the opportunity to experience the tool-and-die trade<br />

through a variety of on-site and in-class projects which focus on<br />

design, fabrication, and quality control standards as they relate to<br />

the manufacturing industry. Student work will include both traditional<br />

and advanced manufacturing processes as they apply to design<br />

principles, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic control systems.<br />

Students will investigate, evaluate, and select metals appropriate<br />

for projects and learn to use hand tools, power tools, and welding<br />

techniques. Instruction will take place in the manufacturing shop,<br />

classroom, and through projects undertaken in the community.<br />

Sports Broadcasting<br />

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary <strong>School</strong> SHSM<br />

Sir WIlfrid Laurier was designed around the concepts of sports<br />

and technology. It is physically LINKed to the Ray Friel Athletics<br />

Centre and shares its facilities. This includes three hockey rinks, a<br />

large pool, and exercise facilities. In addition, the school itself has<br />

its own weight room, a triple gym, and two sports fields. Regarding<br />

technology, the school boasts a full broadcasting studio and<br />

the accompanying technology to store, catalogue, and stream all<br />

productions across the school and across the <strong>District</strong>. The school’s<br />

Athletics and Technology programs will cooperate to integrate sports<br />

and broadcasting in a unique program that benefits not only students,<br />

but also the community at large. A partnership with Rogers<br />

Cablevision will enable student opportunities to provide play-by-play<br />

and video coverage of school and community athletics across the<br />

region. Post secondary partnerships will also add further depth to<br />

the program. The net result will be a unique curricular combination<br />

where students who graduate from the program are well versed<br />

in all aspects of athletics, but also in the skills required to coach,<br />

referee, and produce network quality broadcasts of a diverse range<br />

of sporting events.<br />

Woodroffe High <strong>School</strong> SHSM<br />

Students will develop their athletic abilities with a special focus on<br />

performance. Staff will work with the whole person, challenging<br />

student athletes to grow emotionally and overcome specific performance<br />

challenges. As a result, students will gain confidence to<br />

pursue their post-secondary education and build on their success by<br />

gaining transferable skills for whatever career choices they make.<br />

This program will also benefit students by promoting healthy and<br />

active living. The additional training received in the areas of group<br />

dynamics, team-building, and communication will allow students to<br />

perform with a sense of confidence and satisfaction in pursuing their
