Weekend 

More than 800 attended the first annual 

Landstar BCO All-Star Weekend. The threeday 

event honoring Landstar Roadstars and 

Million Mile Safe Drivers was held in Orlando 

at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes Resort in 

July. 

In addition to the truck giveaway, attendees 

heard from nationally-known consultant 

Dan Baker, “The Man on the People’s Side of 

Trucking” and enjoyed the music of country 

music star Aaron Tippin. 

“I felt like a princess in a fairy tale,” 

said BCO Beverly Peterson, one of 10 

new Roadstars honored. “The hotel was 

spectacular, everyone was nice and the rooms 

were wonderful. I’ll be walking on cloud nine 

for a long time after receiving what I consider 

to be a lifetime achievement award.” 

When BCOs and their spouses weren’t 

visiting either of two area theme parks, 

shopping, fishing or golfing, they were 

floating down the hotel’s lazy river, eating or 

chatting with fellow “All-Stars.”

Landstar/Peterbilt Truck Giveaway 

The winner of the brand new Peterbilt 

Truck given away at Landstar’s first annual 

BCO All-Star Weekend just couldn’t believe 

it. 

“I really won?” asked the shocked winner 

of the Landstar/Peterbilt Truck Giveaway 

Harold Stewart. “Praise the Lord.” 

Each Million Miler and Roadstar in the 

Landstar system automatically received one 

entry. On the first evening, nine names were 

drawn at random by Landstar’s Chairman, 

President and CEO Henry Gerkens. From 

those nine, Gerkens randomly selected 

three entries during the events the following 

morning. Then, Saturday night, Gerkens 

randomly selected another two names from 

a separate set of entries given to those BCOs 

attending the event. The two attending BCOs, 

Roadstar Daryl Williams and new Roadstar 

inductee Hank Faber, were called to the 

stage. The three BCOs selected that morning, 

Roadstar and 2 Million Miler Kenny Cleaver, 

and Million Milers Jim Heilig and Harold 

Stewart, who were all three on speaker phone, 

each selected a stand-in to go up on stage in their place. 

After each finalist selected one of five “mini trucks” 

on stage, at the countdown, they turned the key to 

determine the winner. 

When Gerkens informed Stewart that he’d won, the 

Landstar/Peterbilt Truck Giveaway winner Harold Stewart 

with his new 2013 Peterbilt 386. 

BCO sounded stunned. “I won?” he asked in disbelief. Once 

the good news started to sink in, he was ready to hang up 

and start calling family and friends to spread the word about 

his good fortune.

2012 2011 BCO Convention All-Star - Exceed Weekend the Need 

Lifetime Achievement Award 

Landstar Chairman, President and

The Landstar BCO Lifetime 

Achievement Award was awarded 

for the very first time at the All-Star 

event. 

Landstar’s Chairman, President 

and CEO Henry Gerkens revealed 

the award and the winner after the 

induction ceremony Saturday night. 

To be considered for this award: 

• You must be an active or retired 

Landstar BCO who has been leased to 

Landstar for 20 consecutive years 

• You must have earned 2 Million 

Miler status as a Landstar BCO 

• You must be a Landstar Roadstar 

Those considered for this Lifetime 

Achievement Award must have 

consistently demonstrated trucking 

professionalism throughout his or 

her career and through positive 

interactions with regulatory and 

enforcement personnel, customers, 

agents and Landstar employees. 

“This year’s recipient has been a 

part of the Landstar family for many, 

many years,” said Gerkens. “Those 

who know him describe this BCO as 

easy going, even tempered and the 

consummate trucking professional.” 

Finally, Gerkens called out the 

recipient of the very first Landstar 

BCO Lifetime Achievement Award. 

“Scotty Collett,” he said, urging 

Collett to the stage. “Scotty leased 

on with Ligon Specialized Hauling 

in 1968 – long before cell phones, 

electronic logs, or even Landstar as 

we know it today.” 

Married for 39 years, Scotty and 

his wife, Louise, have more than 

10 grandchildren and 11 great 

grandchildren. A Landstar 4 Million 

Mile Safe Driver, Collett has been 

recognized for his professionalism 

many times over.

Weekend held in Orlando, Florida.

Landstar's Class of 2011 Million Mile Safe Drivers Recognized 

Landstar recognized 157 men and women for their outstanding safety records 

and professionalism behind the wheel at the brand new BCO All-Star Weekend. 

For the first time, the newest classes of Landstar Roadstars and Landstar Million 

Mile Safe Drivers were inducted together at the same event. 

“Each year it gives me great ppleasure to recognize those outstanding men 

and women who represent the talent, hard work and dedication to safety that 

make up Landstar’s core values,” said Landstar Chairman, President and CEO 

Henry Gerkens. “Their achievement, as individuals and as a group, is to be 

commended.” 

On average, it takes a truck operator 10 years to travel a million miles. This 

distance would take the typical driver of a passenger vehicle 67 years – around 

the time of their 83rd birthday – to complete. There were 142 BCOs honored 

for the first time for driving 1 million consecutive miles without a preventable 

accident. There were 14 Two Million Milers inducted, and leading the class of 

2011 is 4 Million Mile Safe Driver Ray Dillard.

New EOBR Program Now Available 

Existing BCOs who voluntarily 

participate will be loaned at no 

charge an Electronic On-Board 

Recorder (Qualcomm EOBR 

MCP50). This new program 

also offers existing BCOs free 

installation of an MCP50 and a 

reduced rate on monthly air-time 

charges. Plus, volunteers will 

increase their chances to win a 

free truck with five entries into the 

Landstar Safe Truck Giveaway at 

Appreciation Days in January! 

“Carriers can no longer afford not to utilize EOBRs to avoid elevated CSA 

scores and meet customer demands for CSA performance,” says Landstar Vice 

President of Compliance Jeannie Gordon. “For BCOs, EOBRs eliminate paper 

logs and other manual compliance processes, ensure that your log is always 

current, and offer a great way to prevent CSA points!” 

Owner-operators submitting a work history to Landstar after August 1, 2012 

will be required to equip their truck with an EOBR. 

“It is definitely a sound business move to voluntarily have an EOBR 

installed. By volunteering, you can avoid the costs associated with purchasing 

and installing a unit. Landstar’s program also offers a reduction on the monthly 

service plan cost, AND five entries to win the giveaway truck in January,” 

says Gordon. “Otherwise, you run the risk of making administrative errors that 

create violations and can lead to the BCO having to foot the bill on his own.” 

Existing BCOs who do not have an EOBR in their truck and receive 

Hours-of-Service violations may not be eligible to participate in the MCP50 

“no charge” program. Through LCAPP, a BCO can purchase an MCP50 for 

$699 plus installation fees. That’s potentially money out of your pocket if 

you choose not to participate from the start.

2011 In The Convention News - Exceed the Need 

Landstar Rankings 

Landstar was once again named among the Top 3PLs 

by Logistics Management magazine. In the annual report, 

which appeared in the June issue, Landstar is ranked 

20th among the Top 30 Domestic 3PLs and 45th among 

the Top 50 Global 3PLs. The special report on the third 

party logistics industry is based on 2011 gross logistics 

revenue, provided by Armstrong & Associates. 

Landstar is listed fourth among the Top 25 Truckload 

Carriers in a special report published in the May/June 

issue of Supply Chain Management Review magazine. 

The annual listing of the nation’s top trucking companies 

was compiled by trucking analyst firm SJ Consulting, 

using 2011 revenues. According to the publication, the 

SC&RA Recognitions 

Scotty Collett and Ray Dillard, both Landstar Roadstars and 4 Million Mile Safe 

Drivers, were both honored by The Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association 

(SC&RA). The two BCOs were among nine professional drivers from three 

companies to receive a Million Miler Award for Safety Excellence from the SC&RA 

during its annual conference held in Austin, Texas, this past spring. The awards were 

actually presented during Landstar's BCO All-Star Weekend. 

“We feel it is important that they receive recognition because professional heavy 

haul drivers are a dedicated and motivated group that transport essential cargo 

that impacts our nation’s well being,” said Doug Ball, SC&RA Vice President- 

Transportation. 

The SC&RA also presented Landstar with a Fleet Safety Award for having the 

lowest accident frequency rate in the Over 100 Million Miles category, and several 

Fleet Safety Improvement Awards. 

The annual awards are part of SC&RA’s efforts to encourage its motor carrier 

members to transport, lift and erect oversize/overweight items safely. The SC&RA is 

an international trade association of more than 1,300 members from 47 nations.

subsidiaries of multibillion dollar corporations to familyowned 

companies. “But what all of these top operators 

have in common is operational excellence,” according to 

the article. 

Landstar moved up the list of Fortune 1,000 

companies. Landstar is listed as 767th among the 

publication’s annual listing of America’s Largest

In an ordinary world, fuel prices 

would be stable, freight would be

Twenty-one Landstar employees are now certified in Transportation and 

Logistics under the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Cohort Program 

which allows professionals to further develop and upgrade their skills in 

relevant areas of study including transportation economics and management, 

logistics management, international transportation and logistics, and supply 

chain management. 

Each employee who graduated from the six-month CTL program spent 

two weekends per month in class, completed group lab projects and passed a 

comprehensive exam. 

“Even though logistics software has been my focus for 16 years, I felt my 

business knowledge was lacking, especially in the International supply chain 

arena,” said Landstar’s Sid Sutphin. “The CTL helped me solidify my current 

understanding and fill in many gaps.” 

The Cohort Program is jointly sponsored by the American Society of 

Transportation and Logistics, Inc., the UNF Coggin College of Business, 

Transportation and Logistics Flagship Program and the Division of 

Continuing Education.

Congratulations to the first 25 agents to receive the new Landstar 101 

Certification! The agents not only received their certificate, but also a Landstar 

shirt as a thank you for kicking off the new program. 

The Agent Development department designed the Landstar 101 Certification 

program to provide new and existing agents with a general overview of key 

elements of Landstar’s policies and procedures. 

“The goal is to help you in assuring your agency staff is well trained and 

allow you the ability to grow without spending tremendous resources on 

the development of new people,” says Landstar Vice President of Agent 

Development Lisa Pate. “Landstar 101 is also great as a refresher course.”

Agent Resources / e-Learning / Landstar 101. There are eight modules included 

in the program. Each presentation is followed by a few quiz questions. In order 

to receive a certificate of completion, you must score 90 percent or better on

Checklist under the video module titled Welcome and Navigating through 

Landstar. Then email your checklist to agentdevelopment@landstar.com for 

a certificate.

Safety Award 

Landstar Express America earned a Class 4 Fleet 

Safety Award at the 2012 Illinois Professional 

Truck Driving Championships held June 15 -16. 

Competing for honors at the Illinois Trucking 

Association event were 142 truck drivers from 

21 companies. 

Phillips takes 2nd in Florida 

Truck Driving Championship 

Landstar BCO Robert Phillips 

earned 2nd place in the 5-axle 

category of the 2012 Florida 

Truck Driving Championships in 

June. Phillips, a Landstar Million 

Mile Safe Driver, gained entry 

into the event by placing in the 

top three at Landstar’s own 

Truck Driving Championship 

during Appreciation Days

Up to Speed 

Growing Capacity 

Landstar has been successful in 

growing truck capacity to meet the 

growing demand from customers. The 

number of BCOs leased to Landstar 

has increased by more than 200 from 

the middle of 2011 and has increased 

by nearly 90 since the beginning 

of 2012. While the standards for 

BCOs remain stringent, the process 

for leasing on has been streamlined 

through the use of a web-based work 

history. Landstar has created a website 

(www.lease2landstar.com) that 

allows prospective BCOs to begin to 

understand the organization and the 

value of becoming a BCO. 

New BCOs are not only coming 

on board, but Landstar has one of 

the strongest retention rates in the 

industry. BCO truck turnover remains 

very low and is evidence that, for the 

right owner/operator, Landstar is an 

excellent choice. BCOs and agents 

continue to be very credible recruiters 

of owner/operators and we ask that 

you continue to point good prospects 

to the above website or to the Landstar 

Recruiting department. 

Demand for quality capacity 

providers continues to be high as 

we enter into the back half of 2012. 

Customers determine quality based 

upon several factors: safety record, 

reliability and communications being 

high on the list. 

“Safety record” is typically 

comprised of DOT safety rating, 

CSA scores, and accident & cargo 

claim frequency, an area where 

Landstar has historically performed 

well. CSA Fatigue Basic scores 

are currently challenging Landstar 

and represent an area that must be 

continuously monitored. Customers 

expect Landstar to outperform in this 

area and increasingly see CSA scores 

as paramount to other safety metrics. 

The company has rolled out an EOBR 

program to assist in attaining the 

results we need to achieve. 

“Reliability” is determined by ontime 

pick-up and delivery, something 

that Landstar also does well. 

“Communications” is determined 

by consistency and accuracy of 

status reporting, such as Arrival at 

Shipper, Departure from Shipper, 

In-transit and Delivery check calls. 

“Communications” is important 

to most customers who want to 

know where their product is, and is 

an expectation that BCOs should 

continue to meet using the available 

tools.

Sandy Burnette of the FAR agency 

in Dyer, Arkansas, in Region 6, has 

been named the May 2012 LSO of the 

Month. Burnette and her staff at FAR 

finished 2011 with no preventable or 

DOT accidents and zero cargo claims. 

The agency’s safety excellence has 

continued in 2012 with no accidents 

to date. Burnette believes in Complete 

and Accurate Dispatch and attributes 

the practice to FAR’s outstanding 

safety results to the practice. A regular 

on the Landstar Safety Thursday 

Conference Call, Burnette and the staff 

attend the annual LSO meeting held in 

Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Congratulations 

to Burnette and the FAR staff for 

making safety a priority! 

Dan Galloway of the PRT agency 

in Portland, Oregon, in Region 1, is 

the June 2012 LSO of the Month. PRT 

is accident and claim free in 2012 to 

date. The agency sponsors an annual 

safety golf outing in June. This popular 

event brings together BCOs, agents, 

corporate employees and customers, 

and allows Galloway the opportunity 

to get first-hand perspectives on safety. 

The PRT agency maintains a positive 

relationship with the local DOT office 

and is an active participant on the 

Safety Thursday Conference Call. 

LSOs of the Month 

Congratulations to Galloway and the 

entire PRT staff! 

Bobby Schlieske of the MIN agency 

in St. Paul, Minnesota, in Region 2, 

has been selected as the July 2012 

LSO of the Month. Schlieske and the 

staff at MIN have an impressive zero 

cargo claims year to date. The agency 

has demonstrated a commitment to 

Landstar’s M.U.S.T. program with 

four successful customer visits since 

2008. MIN annually co-sponsors the 

popular Riverboat Cruise and Safety 

meeting in Stillwater, Minnesota, with 

the CWT agency and holds an annual 

Truck Beauty Contest to determine 

which BCO’s truck will appear on 

the agency’s promotional mouse pad 

calendar. Great job to Schlieske and 

the staff at MIN!

Aluminum Cans 

Green in More Ways 

Than One! 

Not only is recycling your aluminum soft drink cans a part of “going green” 

but also “gives green!” The Jacksonville, Florida Green Team collects the 

cans placed in the break room receptacles and recycles them at a local scrap 

metal collection company in exchange for money used to fund Green Team 

projects throughout the year. By placing your cans in the appropriate bins 

located in all break rooms and The Truck Stop Café, you are supporting the 

environment AND your Landstar Green Team! 

Certification Update 

The Internal Audit department is proud to announce that Landstar has retained 

its certification to RC 14001:2008, which includes a certification to ISO 14001. 

The Responsible Care external audit took place during the week of May 28. 

The external auditor spent two days in Rockford and three days in Jacksonville. 

The ISO 9001:2008 external audit conducted the week of June 18 was also a 

success. Congratulations on successfully completing the ISO recertification 

external audit! The Internal Audit department would like to thank all of those 

involved with the Responsible Care and ISO audits. When referring to any of

2012 Truck Beauty Calendar Contest 

2011 Winners - Stuart & Nancy 

Thomas from New Hope, AL 

BCOs, are your trucks “ready for their close-up?” The MIN agency is once 

again holding a truck beauty photo contest where the winner will be featured 

on the agency’s 2013 mouse pad calendar. 

The calendar has become an annual tradition for Landstar Agent Bobby 

Schlieske of Bestway in St. Paul, Minnesota, who gives them out to the 

agency’s customers and other business associates. 

Last year was the first time the MIN agency solicited BCOs to submit 

pictures of their trucks for the calendar. The response from BCOs was so 

positive that they decided to do it again. The agency is looking for high 

resolution photos of BCOs’ trucks displaying the Landstar logo. Schlieske 

says he would really like to see trucks pictured in unique and scenic 

locations. 

Photo submissions and inquiries about the contest can be emailed to 

e.berg@bestwayinc.com. The deadline for submissions is September 7. 

Soap Box Derby Safety Event 

Landstar Agent Bruce Baker of the BAB agency 

in May held an educational safety event at an 

All-America Soap Box Derby race in Akron, Ohio. 

The more than 1,000 attendees of the 3rd Annual 

International Soap Box Derby Gravity Racing 

Challenge at Derby Downs had an opportunity to 

experience what it’s like to sit in a big rig. Baker, 

with the help of BCO Don Ridzon, Sr. and 

Landstar Field Safety Manager John 

Waddington, positioned vehicles in the 

blind spots of a tractor trailer so visitors 

could experience what professional drivers 

go through while navigating the busy 

highways. They also played an educational 

No-Zone video for visitors.

Views From the Road 

Weekend Detour 

We had a wonderful detour on Sunday June 3, 2012. We took our 

truck and went to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. 

I highly recommend it to anyone passing through Rapid City, South 

Dakota. They do not allow tractors and trailers, but will allow bobtails and 

straight trucks. 

It costs $11.00 for parking and the parking pass is good for the rest of 

the year. Mt. Rushmore is located about 30 miles from Rapid City and the 

drive is beautiful. We took lots of pictures and even had breakfast with the 

presidents. It was an experience I will always treasure. This is one of the 

reasons I love my job so much!!!!!!
