Position: National Team Head Coach(16 months contract – honorarium -no benefits)Start Date: September 2 nd , 2013End Date: January 1 st , 2015Job Description:Nature of the Position:Karate Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of karate in Canada.Karate Canada is presently seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated part-time National Team Head Coachwho will exercise fairness and leadership with all national team athletes and their personal coaches, as wellas with all other National Team coaching staff. The National Team Head Coach is to work in conjunction withthe High Performance Coordinator and the High Performance Committee (HPC) to refine and executeKarate Canada's High Performance plan, leading to sustainable medal performances at International Opens,Pan American Championships, North American Cups, Commonwealth Championships, WorldChampionships and Pan American Games.Karate Canada receives financial contributions from the federal government and other agencies,organizations and corporate sponsors, and is accountable for the disbursement and reporting of fundsaccording to the contracted terms and conditions. Programs, activities and services are operated within thelimitations established in an annual operating budget approved by the Board of Directors. Karate Canadastaff is responsible to manage and administer the association’s finances and to provide administrativesupport for all association activities.Status:Part Time Contractor(some evening and weekend work may be involved)On average 15 hours weekly.Type of Position:Contract: renewable if budget permits.Travel: The National Team Head Coach will be required to travel to domestic and international events uponthe Executive Director’s request.Location: The National Team Head Coach will work from a location of their preference.Salary: $20,000.00General Description:Within Karate Canada, the National Team Head Coach is the lead individual developing and leading theworking relationships with all other national team coaches, regional centre coaches and national teamathlete’s club coaches, in order to create an effective High Performance development pathway in line withKarate Canada`s Long Term Athlete Development principles.The National Team Head Coach has the responsibility of developing, organizing, supervising andimplementing the National Team training and competitive programs. He /she must also oversee all otherNational Team permanent and event Coaches, as well as the Regional Centre Coaches. The National TeamHead Coach reports to the High Performance Director (HPD), or, in the absence of a High Performance

Director, to the Executive Director. This Coach may train National Team athletes and/ or their club coachesand / or may also serve as the head coach of a karate club while assuming the appointment as the sport’sNational Team Head Coach. The National Team Head Coach must assume various administrative,managerial and organizational responsibilities, including supervision and development of other NationalTeam coaches and support personnel.General DutiesWith the assistance of the High Performance Committee and of the High Performance Committee, theNational Team Head Coach will:• Develop, budget and execute the National Team events, selection, criteria, training plans andcalendar until January 2015.• Monitor and evaluate Senior National Team athletes’ yearly training plans in collaboration with theirclub coaches and Regional Centre Coaches.• Work with the Executive Director, HP Coordinator and HP Committee to prepare and presentKarate Canada’s yearly HP Report (November).• Assist with the selection and ensure the management, mentoring, evaluation and development ofother National Team Coaching Staff.• Co-lead in the strategic planning and development of all national team and high performanceprograms, including the Athlete Assistance Program, as well as talent identification anddevelopment programs and initiatives.(A more detailed and extensive job description is available at:http://www.karatecanada.org/pdf/KC_Head_Coach_Job_Description_Final_19July2013.pdf )Term of Appointment• From September 2 nd , 2013 to January 1 st , 2015• Remuneration will be revised on April 1 st , 2014Core Attributes• Develops team unity by being a positive role model and provides positive leadership for athletes /staff / coaches.• Willingness to share knowledge and experiences with all national athletes and their club coaches.• Commits the necessary time, effort and sacrifice needed to support HP athlete development.• Fosters a climate of mutual respect and cooperation amongst National Team Coaches, supportstaff, National Team and development athletes and their club coaches.Degrees of supervisionThe National Team Head Coach will consult regularly with and report to the HP Director or, in the absenceof a HP Director, with and to the Executive Director, in all technical and programming activities.Decision making authorityThe National Team Head Coach will be responsible and will have decision-making authority for coachingrelatedmatters within the High Performance Program, in accordance with approved budgets and policies.Beyond these limits, she/he is required to have decisions approved by the HP Director or, in the absence ofan HP Director, by the Executive Director. Responsibilities can be amended as deemed necessary by the HPDirector (or Executive Director).

Performance ReviewOn an annual basis, the National Team Head Coach will be expected to accomplish specific end results, thesatisfactory fulfillment of job responsibilities and attainment of required levels of ability in key competencyareas. These three (3) components will form the basis of an annual performance review conducted by theExecutive Director.Qualifications• Minimum 3 years of experience in training, coaching and supporting sport teams• Minimum of two years’ experience managing and coordinating programs for an organisation• Demonstrated expertise in WKF karate, including in-depth knowledge of kumite and goodknowledge of kata• Trained in Comp Dev NCCP or higher level, or its equivalent as recognized by KC and/or theCoaching Association of Canada• Knowledge of the Canadian Sport System and of Karate Canada’s policies, High Performance planand programs• Post-secondary education in kinesiology, leisure, management, or other sport-related field, orcombination of experiences with some experience in a Canadian National Sport Organisation will beconsidered strong assets.• Up-to-date First Aid certification and Referee license are strong assets• Close attention to detail and accuracy, with ability to follow through• Highly developed verbal and written communication skills - ability to interact effectively withgeneral public, volunteers, sport groups and organizations• Bilingualism (English & French) will be considered a strong asset• Mastery of basic software and information technology tools (Excel, Office, web & email, etc)• Reliable, responsible, and autonomous• Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision and as part of a team• Superior organizational and time management skills with a strong ability to multi-task effectivelyand work under time constraints and deadlines• Highly adaptable, with strong consultative, facilitation, problem-solving and decision-making skills• Ability to travel• Flexible schedule (ability to commit to attending certain events)• Demonstrated ability to train high-level athletes will constitute an important asset, as will pastexperience as a high level competitor.Application Deadline: August 7 th , 2013Commencement of employment: September 2 nd , 2013All applications will be confidential.Applicants must submit their resume via email to Olivier Pineau, at: Olivier@karatecanada.orgWe thank all candidates for their interest, however; only those candidates under consideration will becontacted.
