Position: National Team Head Coach(16 months contract – honorarium -no benefits)Start Date: September 2 nd , 2013End Date: January 1 st , 2015Job Description:Nature of <strong>the</strong> Position:<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> is <strong>the</strong> national sport govern<strong>in</strong>g body for <strong>the</strong> sport of karate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>.<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> is presently <strong>see</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g an enthusiastic and self-motivated part-time National Team Head Coachwho will exercise fairness and leadership with all national team athletes and <strong>the</strong>ir personal coaches, as wellas with all o<strong>the</strong>r National Team coach<strong>in</strong>g staff. The National Team Head Coach is <strong>to</strong> work <strong>in</strong> conjunction with<strong>the</strong> High Performance Coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> High Performance Committee (HPC) <strong>to</strong> ref<strong>in</strong>e and execute<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>'s High Performance plan, lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able medal performances at International Opens,Pan American Championships, North American Cups, Commonwealth Championships, WorldChampionships and Pan American Games.<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong> receives f<strong>in</strong>ancial contributions from <strong>the</strong> federal government and o<strong>the</strong>r agencies,organizations and corporate sponsors, and is accountable for <strong>the</strong> disbursement and report<strong>in</strong>g of fundsaccord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> contracted terms and conditions. Programs, activities and services are operated with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>limitations established <strong>in</strong> an annual operat<strong>in</strong>g budget approved by <strong>the</strong> Board of Direc<strong>to</strong>rs. <strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>staff is responsible <strong>to</strong> manage and adm<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>the</strong> association’s f<strong>in</strong>ances and <strong>to</strong> provide adm<strong>in</strong>istrativesupport for all association activities.Status:Part Time Contrac<strong>to</strong>r(some even<strong>in</strong>g and weekend work may be <strong>in</strong>volved)On average 15 hours weekly.Type of Position:Contract: renewable if budget permits.Travel: The National Team Head Coach will be required <strong>to</strong> travel <strong>to</strong> domestic and <strong>in</strong>ternational events upon<strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r’s request.Location: The National Team Head Coach will work from a location of <strong>the</strong>ir preference.Salary: $20,000.00General Description:With<strong>in</strong> <strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>, <strong>the</strong> National Team Head Coach is <strong>the</strong> lead <strong>in</strong>dividual develop<strong>in</strong>g and lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>work<strong>in</strong>g relationships with all o<strong>the</strong>r national team coaches, regional centre coaches and national teamathlete’s club coaches, <strong>in</strong> <strong>order</strong> <strong>to</strong> create an effective High Performance development pathway <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>`s Long Term Athlete Development pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.The National Team Head Coach has <strong>the</strong> responsibility of develop<strong>in</strong>g, organiz<strong>in</strong>g, supervis<strong>in</strong>g andimplement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> National Team tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and competitive programs. He /she must also over<strong>see</strong> all o<strong>the</strong>rNational Team permanent and event Coaches, as well as <strong>the</strong> Regional Centre Coaches. The National TeamHead Coach reports <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Performance Direc<strong>to</strong>r (HPD), or, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence of a High Performance


Direc<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r. This Coach may tra<strong>in</strong> National Team athletes and/ or <strong>the</strong>ir club coachesand / or may also serve as <strong>the</strong> head coach of a karate club while assum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>tment as <strong>the</strong> sport’sNational Team Head Coach. The National Team Head Coach must assume various adm<strong>in</strong>istrative,managerial and organizational responsibilities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g supervision and development of o<strong>the</strong>r NationalTeam coaches and support personnel.General DutiesWith <strong>the</strong> assistance of <strong>the</strong> High Performance Committee and of <strong>the</strong> High Performance Committee, <strong>the</strong>National Team Head Coach will:• Develop, budget and execute <strong>the</strong> National Team events, selection, criteria, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plans andcalendar until January 2015.• Moni<strong>to</strong>r and evaluate Senior National Team athletes’ yearly tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g plans <strong>in</strong> collaboration with <strong>the</strong>irclub coaches and Regional Centre Coaches.• Work with <strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r, HP Coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r and HP Committee <strong>to</strong> prepare and present<strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>’s yearly HP Report (November).• Assist with <strong>the</strong> selection and ensure <strong>the</strong> management, men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g, evaluation and development ofo<strong>the</strong>r National Team Coach<strong>in</strong>g Staff.• Co-lead <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g and development of all national team and high performanceprograms, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Athlete Assistance Program, as well as talent identification anddevelopment programs and <strong>in</strong>itiatives.(A more detailed and extensive <strong>job</strong> description is available at:http://www.karatecanada.org/pdf/KC_Head_Coach_Job_Description_F<strong>in</strong>al_19July2013.pdf )Term of Appo<strong>in</strong>tment• From September 2 nd , 2013 <strong>to</strong> January 1 st , 2015• Remuneration will be revised on April 1 st , 2014Core Attributes• Develops team unity by be<strong>in</strong>g a positive role model and provides positive leadership for athletes /staff / coaches.• Will<strong>in</strong>gness <strong>to</strong> share knowledge and experiences with all national athletes and <strong>the</strong>ir club coaches.• Commits <strong>the</strong> necessary time, effort and sacrifice needed <strong>to</strong> support HP athlete development.• Fosters a climate of mutual respect and cooperation amongst National Team Coaches, supportstaff, National Team and development athletes and <strong>the</strong>ir club coaches.Degrees of supervisionThe National Team Head Coach will consult regularly with and report <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> HP Direc<strong>to</strong>r or, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absenceof a HP Direc<strong>to</strong>r, with and <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> all technical and programm<strong>in</strong>g activities.Decision mak<strong>in</strong>g authorityThe National Team Head Coach will be responsible and will have decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g authority for coach<strong>in</strong>grelatedmatters with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> High Performance Program, <strong>in</strong> accordance with approved budgets and policies.Beyond <strong>the</strong>se limits, she/he is required <strong>to</strong> have decisions approved by <strong>the</strong> HP Direc<strong>to</strong>r or, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence ofan HP Direc<strong>to</strong>r, by <strong>the</strong> Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r. Responsibilities can be amended as deemed necessary by <strong>the</strong> HPDirec<strong>to</strong>r (or Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r).


Performance ReviewOn an annual basis, <strong>the</strong> National Team Head Coach will be expected <strong>to</strong> accomplish specific end results, <strong>the</strong>satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry fulfillment of <strong>job</strong> responsibilities and atta<strong>in</strong>ment of required levels of ability <strong>in</strong> key competencyareas. These three (3) components will form <strong>the</strong> basis of an annual performance review conducted by <strong>the</strong>Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r.Qualifications• M<strong>in</strong>imum 3 years of experience <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, coach<strong>in</strong>g and support<strong>in</strong>g sport teams• M<strong>in</strong>imum of two years’ experience manag<strong>in</strong>g and coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g programs for an organisation• Demonstrated expertise <strong>in</strong> WKF karate, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>-depth knowledge of kumite and goodknowledge of kata• Tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Comp Dev NCCP or higher level, or its equivalent as recognized by KC and/or <strong>the</strong>Coach<strong>in</strong>g Association of <strong>Canada</strong>• Knowledge of <strong>the</strong> Canadian Sport System and of <strong>Karate</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>’s policies, High Performance planand programs• Post-secondary education <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>esiology, leisure, management, or o<strong>the</strong>r sport-related field, orcomb<strong>in</strong>ation of experiences with some experience <strong>in</strong> a Canadian National Sport Organisation will beconsidered strong assets.• Up-<strong>to</strong>-date First Aid certification and Referee license are strong assets• Close attention <strong>to</strong> detail and accuracy, with ability <strong>to</strong> follow through• Highly developed verbal and written communication skills - ability <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>teract effectively withgeneral public, volunteers, sport groups and organizations• Bil<strong>in</strong>gualism (English & French) will be considered a strong asset• Mastery of basic software and <strong>in</strong>formation technology <strong>to</strong>ols (Excel, Office, web & email, etc)• Reliable, responsible, and au<strong>to</strong>nomous• Ability <strong>to</strong> work <strong>in</strong>dependently and proactively with m<strong>in</strong>imal supervision and as part of a team• Superior organizational and time management skills with a strong ability <strong>to</strong> multi-task effectivelyand work under time constra<strong>in</strong>ts and deadl<strong>in</strong>es• Highly adaptable, with strong consultative, facilitation, problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g and decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g skills• Ability <strong>to</strong> travel• Flexible schedule (ability <strong>to</strong> commit <strong>to</strong> attend<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> events)• Demonstrated ability <strong>to</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> high-level athletes will constitute an important asset, as will pastexperience as a high level competi<strong>to</strong>r.Application Deadl<strong>in</strong>e: August 7 th , 2013Commencement of employment: September 2 nd , 2013All applications will be confidential.Applicants must submit <strong>the</strong>ir resume via email <strong>to</strong> Olivier P<strong>in</strong>eau, at: Olivier@karatecanada.orgWe thank all candidates for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>terest, however; only those candidates under consideration will becontacted.
