texas connection Tex Avery redefined popular ’toon character By Douglas Moss Did you know that one of the most recognizable phrases in the world, “What’s up, Doc”, has a Texas connection? Frederick Bean “Tex” Avery was born February 26, 1908 in Taylor, Texas. His family claimed lineage to Daniel Boone and the Judge Roy Bean, though his connection to the “Law West of the Pecos” is quite circumspect. He attended North Dallas High School, where the favorite catch phrase of the day was one you would later hear from a famous animated rabbit. After graduating from high school in 1926, he went to Chicago to study art. From there he moved onto Los Angeles, where he found work in a small cartoon studio. He later worked at Universal with Walter Lantz, the creator of Woody Woodpecker, before moving on to Warner Brothers in 1935. At Warner Brothers, he is the cartoonist given credit for developing cartoon characters like Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Elmer Fudd. Avery brought an edge to his cartoons that was different from his main competitor, Walt Disney Studios. His animated shorts were edgy filled with innuendo, sarcasm, and irony that appealed to adults as well as children. One of his favorite themes for his shorts was the fairy tale. Going against the literary archetype of those moralistic stories, Avery used highly sexualized female characters and a character who would show up time and again in his works, the Wolf. Though Bugs Bunny did not originate with Avery—the prototype for Bugs was Happy Rabbit—he is given credit for really developing the “Wascally Wabbit” into a major character. Avery first had Bugs Bunny use the now famous phrase from North Dallas High, “What’s up, Doc?” in his first meeting with the hunter, Elmer Fudd. Bug Bunny cartoon, The Heckling Hare, led him to leave Warner Brothers for Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). His 1942 MGM short, The Wolf Blitz, also received an Academy Award nomination. His most famous character at MGM was Droopy Dog, who often matched wits with the Wolf, a common foe in many of Avery’s animated shorts. Droopy was an understated and diminutive Bassett hound, who perservered and always won out in the end. Avery directed 16 Droopy animated shorts while at MGM. In 1954, he left MGM to work with Walter Lantz again. But his tenure was short with the Lantz studios, making only four cartoons. Burned out from his work in Hollywood, he moved into doing television commercials. Anyone who can remember the Raid insecticide commercials of the 1960s (“Oh no, RAID!), and the now politically incorrect Frito Bandito, was exposed to the creations of his advertising company. In 1980, he joined Hanna-Barbera, one of his former competitors in the late 1950s. His contribution there was brief, as he literally died while on the job at the age of 72.
