Stellar event suffered from lackluster turnout
By Arthur P. von Reyn
By all measures except attendance, the
western-themed National Topical Stamp
Show 2007, held June 15-17 in Irving, Texas,
was a stellar achievement, offering many attractions
not normally associated with philatelic
events.
Since collectors come to a show to
visit dealers more than anything else, Ray E.
Cartier, executive director of the sponsoring
American Topical Association (ATA), specifically
tried to broaden the appeal of what would
otherwise be a niche specialty collectors’ event
by advertising the fact there would be 28
dealers on hand, a number of whom did not
specifically deal in topical stamps.
Collectors failed to respond, however, as
the turnout was only 430 registered collectors
for an event that should have drawn two
or three times that number. Local collectors
were particularly conspicuous in their absence,
despite a publicity mailing. One explanation
might be a dealers’ bourse, held two weekends
before, tapped out collectors’ pocketbooks;
another could be Father’s Day weekend is not
World Series of Philately event, sanctioned by
the American Philatelic Society, and occurs in
a different city each year. The show was venue
The show’s Grand Award, a Remington
exhibit will compete for the Champion of
Jack André Denys won the Reserve Grand
Prize in multi-frame division for his Bayeax
captured by Fran Adams for Neandertal, and
Trevor Thomas accepted the Youth Grand
Award for his The Game of Soccer.
TPA members showing competitive exhibits
were Ray E. Cartier, Peter C. Elias, Jane
