Question preparationPrepar<strong>in</strong>g for multiple choice question (MCQ)examsA very common form of exam question type.With MCQs people often feel comforted by theknowledge that at least ‘the answer is there’.However, study for an MCQ exam should beas rigorous as for any other exam; don’t let thepresence of answers limit your revision efforts.One good strategy <strong>in</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with MCQs is <strong>to</strong>cover the possible answers (options) and workout a likely solution before look<strong>in</strong>g at the options.Another good MCQ strategy is <strong>to</strong> narrow theoptions down by firstly elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g clearly <strong>in</strong>correctanswers.Time is another fac<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> consider with MCQexams. Most MCQ exams are set up for you<strong>to</strong> answer the questions at a fairly quick rate,so you’ll need <strong>to</strong> work through the questionsmethodically and at a good pace. Modify your problems andexperiment with different variables. This type of preparationcan also be done successfully <strong>in</strong> study groups, asexpla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a problem <strong>to</strong> a friend is a great way <strong>to</strong>revise it yourself.Prepar<strong>in</strong>g for essays<strong>The</strong> best way <strong>to</strong> prepare for essay-based examsis <strong>to</strong> write essays under exam conditions; i.e.timed and with a word limit. Make sure you don’tjust s<strong>to</strong>p there; have someone whose op<strong>in</strong>ionsyou value check the essay for you and give somefeedback.Prepar<strong>in</strong>g for take-home essay examsTake home exams are commonly used <strong>in</strong>Humanities subjects. <strong>The</strong>se are usually longessays (up <strong>to</strong> 3,000 words) which you have ashort time <strong>to</strong> complete (usually 3-7 days).<strong>The</strong> key <strong>to</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g well <strong>in</strong> any essay-based examis <strong>to</strong> answer the question asked without simplyregurgitat<strong>in</strong>g material you have learnt on the <strong>to</strong>pic.Allow yourself some time <strong>to</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>s<strong>to</strong>rm the essayquestion and plan a response. <strong>The</strong> stages arethe same as those required for an essay (seeChapter 4 Writ<strong>in</strong>g), only your research phase willbe more limited.34 http://services.unimelb.edu.au/academicskills
Us<strong>in</strong>g your memoryIt’s important <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> apply material,but part of successful exam performance isalso <strong>in</strong> recall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation. When recall<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>formation, the emphasis is on work<strong>in</strong>g withthe ideas, not merely cramm<strong>in</strong>g as many factsor ideas as possible <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> your head.<strong>The</strong>ories are important as they help <strong>to</strong> organiseideas. Once the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are unders<strong>to</strong>odother concepts may become clearer.Understand<strong>in</strong>g and organis<strong>in</strong>g ideas aretherefore keys <strong>to</strong> memory. For example if youunderstand the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of why and how aneng<strong>in</strong>e works, it is easier <strong>to</strong> identify a problemand repair a broken-down car.Repeat<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs over and over is one way<strong>to</strong> remember material, but other strategiesand fac<strong>to</strong>rs can <strong>in</strong>fluence how you reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>formation. For example:Motivation: a real <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g makesdetails easier <strong>to</strong> recall. Th<strong>in</strong>k how well you canremember the characters and plot of a movieyou like.Understand<strong>in</strong>g: by understand<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g,you can more easily recall the details withoutlearn<strong>in</strong>g it by rote; it is also more mean<strong>in</strong>gful <strong>to</strong>you as real knowledge, not just data.Organisational patterns: understand<strong>in</strong>g howa certa<strong>in</strong> system is organised allows easierrecall of the separate parts that contribute <strong>to</strong>that system.L<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g: by associat<strong>in</strong>g related items orrecognis<strong>in</strong>g similarities or l<strong>in</strong>ks between ideas,you will remember them more easily.Visualisation: imag<strong>in</strong>ation enhances memory,and be<strong>in</strong>g able <strong>to</strong> visualise someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> athree-dimensional image is a good way <strong>to</strong>embed knowledge.Memory aids: a good way <strong>to</strong> remember items<strong>in</strong> a list is <strong>to</strong> use some type of memory aid withother words; for example, FANBOYS representsthe seven conjunctions - For, And, Nor, But,Or, Yet and So – that are used as sentenceconnec<strong>to</strong>rs, not sentence starters.Tips for exam dayOrganise gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the examCheck all exam <strong>in</strong>formation yourself. Do notrely on others for details such as day, time andlocation of your exams, where you must sit andwhether you are allowed <strong>to</strong> take <strong>in</strong> any materials(e.g. calcula<strong>to</strong>r). Use the Student Portal, LMS orexam noticeboard <strong>to</strong> check and double check thetimetable <strong>in</strong>formation.If you have some time, it is worth go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> thelocation prior <strong>to</strong> your first exam so that you knowexactly where it is. Have a look around; the lessmystery there is about the day, the better you willfeel.Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a sensible study rout<strong>in</strong>e prior <strong>to</strong> the examperiod. If you have morn<strong>in</strong>g exams, then makesure you are do<strong>in</strong>g some morn<strong>in</strong>g study (between9am and 12pm) so the exam is not outside of yourdaily rout<strong>in</strong>e; the same goes for afternoon exams.Allow extra time <strong>in</strong> your journey for any mishaps(flat tyres, cancelled tra<strong>in</strong>s, peak-hour traffic etc.).If you arrive early, use the time <strong>to</strong> gather yourthoughts and calm your nerves. Avoid talk<strong>in</strong>gabout the exam with other students; compar<strong>in</strong>gstudy notes could affect your confidence andunderm<strong>in</strong>e the positive approach <strong>to</strong> the exam thatyou have developed.Use your read<strong>in</strong>g timeMost exams <strong>in</strong>clude 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes of read<strong>in</strong>g time;however, this may vary from subject <strong>to</strong> subject, socheck <strong>in</strong>structions for each exam. Note that thistime is only for read<strong>in</strong>g, as the name suggests,so you cannot write dur<strong>in</strong>g this time. Read<strong>in</strong>gtime also generally beg<strong>in</strong>s 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes before theadvertised start time.Use this time <strong>to</strong> get an overview of the entirepaper by skim read<strong>in</strong>g through it first. Read the<strong>in</strong>structions carefully and work out what you need<strong>to</strong> do; how many questions you need <strong>to</strong> answer;marks for each question; and the amount of timeyou should spend on each question.Time management: keep an eye on the clockEffective time management dur<strong>in</strong>g the exam isan important component of exam success: take<strong>in</strong> a watch <strong>to</strong> keep an eye on the time. <strong>The</strong> morequestions you attempt, the more marks youhave access <strong>to</strong>.
