In The MailPicture PerfectDear Editor,As one of the group whowas privileged to be onthe historic ‘July’ flight, covered in your TelfedNovember 2008 issue The South Africans AreComing, I congratulate you on the choice ofa wonderful photograph on the cover - anOleh Chadash with his baby at the Kotel. It’sa picture that speaks a thousand words.photo: Brian HendlerI also wish to comment on the viewsexpressed by Jonathan Bloom that theleadership and particularly the Rabbinatein S.A. are not pro-aliyah. In defence of theRabbinate, I wish to point out that Johannesburg- and perhaps only one congregationor suburb - does NOT constitute all SouthAfrica.Having lived in Pretoria, Durban, and morerecently Cape Town, the rabbis and Jewishleadership are pro-aliyah. My Cape Townrabbi was thrilled when I decided to makealiyah. He assured me I was performing amitzvah. I have to agree with Evan Gordonin the same article that in the next five yearsmany Jews will leave South Africa and thatthe Rabbinate must harness their talents andinfluence to encourage aliyah.Dion Futerman, Ra’ananaEd note: The poignant photograph above was takenby former South African Brian Hendler. In the photograph on page 36, “Well KeptSecrets”, Elliot Katzenellenbogen is on thetop right. The young lad on the bottom rightis the undersigned. Thevery handsome, specialfellow on the bottomleft is the late Sid Langbart.Continue the goodwork.Joseph (Josie) Shlain, Neve AmirimDear Editor,While commending you on the excellenceof Telfed Magazine, this letter is avery gentle reminder that Israel is a partyto the Berne convention on copyright Law.I refer to the photo of Stanley Kaplan,Chaim Chait (z’l) and Bolly Malin (z’l)on page 16 of the November issue.
