SANTA ANA COLLEGEEDUCATIONAL MASTER PLANBackgroundtoCommitmentLearning: 100 Years & Beyond<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> • Founded in 1915History of <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong><strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> celebrated 90 years of service to students and thecommunity in 2005 and launched a “Decade of Renewal.” As SACprogresses toward its 100-year anniversary, the college continues tobe known for its tradition of educational excellence and communitypartnerships.In 1915, <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> opened its doors as a “Department Junior<strong>College</strong>” to twenty-four students and eleven teaching faculty at <strong>Santa</strong><strong>Ana</strong> High School. It was the second junior college founded in OrangeCounty and the fourth oldest in all of California. The earthquake of1933 forced the college to relocate to a site on North Main Street, whereit served 803 students with thirty-four teaching faculty. In 1947, itmoved to a permanent campus at 17th and Bristol. In 1971, <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong><strong>College</strong> formally separated from the <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> Unified School Districtto form the Rancho Santiago Community <strong>College</strong> District. Currentlythe fourth largest community college district in the state, RSCCD serves35,789 students in credit programs and 18,960 in non-credit programs,representing the communities of <strong>Ana</strong>heim Hills, Garden Grove, Irvine,Orange, <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong>, Tustin and Villa Park. In 1997, the RSCCD became atwo-college district composed of <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> and Santiago Canyon<strong>College</strong>. The main campus of <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> is located at the cornerof 17th and Bristol Streets and occupies an area of sixty-five acres in thegeographic center of Orange County. <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> serves 39,891students in both the credit and non-credit programs at all campuses andsites.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> has always endorsed the state of California’s open doorpolicy to higher education for high school graduates, those in possessionof a California High School Proficiency Certificate, those eighteenyears of age and older who can profit from instruction, and high schoolstudents who qualify for the career advancement placement program, byoffering both credit and non-credit instruction (adult education classes).A full complement of general education, transfer-level, pre-collegiatelevel, and career and technical education classes provides an opportunityfor quality education to the 276,782 residents who compose the diverseservice area of <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong>, Garden Grove, and parts of <strong>Ana</strong>heim, FountainValley, Tustin and Irvine.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> is accredited by the Western Association of Schoolsand <strong>College</strong>s.<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>College</strong> 17
