NEWS RELEASEFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEJanuary 13, 2011Contact: Anthony Adorna<strong>to</strong>Direc<strong>to</strong>r of Communic<strong>at</strong>ions(315) 443‐6173/acadorna@law.syr.eduSyracuse University’s <strong>Unsung</strong> <strong>Hero</strong> <strong>Award</strong> recognizes advoc<strong>at</strong>e for people with disabilitiesOmolara <strong>Funmi</strong>lola <strong>Akinpelu</strong> assists local women with disabilitiesand Deaf women who are survivors of domestic violenceSYRACUSE, NEW YORK – In recognition of her work as a passion<strong>at</strong>e advoc<strong>at</strong>e for people withdisabilities, Omolara <strong>Funmi</strong>lola <strong>Akinpelu</strong>, Research Associ<strong>at</strong>e with the Bur<strong>to</strong>n Bl<strong>at</strong>t Institute(BBI) <strong>at</strong> Syracuse University, has been selected as a recipient of Syracuse University’s 2011<strong>Unsung</strong> <strong>Hero</strong>es <strong>Award</strong>s. <strong>Akinpelu</strong>, along with three other members of the Syracuse community,will be honored during SU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebr<strong>at</strong>ion, “Heirs of a King: Rememberingand Continuing the Work of Global Legacy,” on Sunday, January 23, <strong>at</strong> 6:30 p.m. in the CarrierDome.“<strong>Akinpelu</strong>’s unwavering determin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e a more inclusive community based on sharedresponsibility, compassion, and respect for all speaks <strong>to</strong> the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s‘beloved community,’ said Peter Blanck, BBI Chair and University Professor. “She utilizes herscholarly insight and collabor<strong>at</strong>ive spirit in meaningful ways for the Central New Yorkcommunity.”<strong>Akinpelu</strong> has been instrumental in the cre<strong>at</strong>ion of practical solutions <strong>to</strong> the unique challengesfaced by women with disabilities and Deaf women: they not only experience domestic violence<strong>at</strong> vastly disproportion<strong>at</strong>e numbers, but also encounter barriers <strong>to</strong> seeking assistance. A n<strong>at</strong>ive ofNigeria, <strong>Akinpelu</strong> has helped <strong>to</strong> develop and implement a comprehensive and inclusivecommunity prevention and response system <strong>to</strong> this problem.She is currently involved in Project EMERGE, a BBI initi<strong>at</strong>ive in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with twocommunity agencies, ARISE and Vera House. As Project EMERGE Advoc<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> ARISE, she hasworked <strong>to</strong> identify specific gaps in service, barriers <strong>to</strong> safety and accessible support, and systeminadequacies for this popul<strong>at</strong>ion of women. “Her meaningful work in our community has madethe hope of justice a reality for women with disabilities and Deaf women,” noted TomMcKeown, ARISE Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r. “We are proud <strong>to</strong> be her colleagues.”<strong>Akinpelu</strong>’s collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with ARISE and Vera House has led <strong>to</strong> a coordin<strong>at</strong>ed communityresponse <strong>to</strong> fill a gap in service and promote awareness of women with disabilities and Deafwomen. In addition, <strong>Akinpelu</strong> has helped <strong>to</strong> develop a comprehensive curriculum <strong>to</strong> train staff <strong>at</strong>both ARISE and Vera House <strong>to</strong> improve service delivery <strong>to</strong> women with disabilities and Deaf


women who are survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Her work could have implic<strong>at</strong>ionsbeyond Central New York, as she collabor<strong>at</strong>es with other community partners <strong>to</strong> replic<strong>at</strong>e theprogram in their different organiz<strong>at</strong>ions.“<strong>Akinpelu</strong>’s insight and compassion combined with her dedic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> an important issue havemeant so very much for our community.
