2011 Championships The United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships ventured down a completely new path last year with a dazzling venue and exciting format change. Bowlers at the 2010 event in El Paso, Texas, experienced competing in a convention-center setting for the first time, and that experience will continue in 2011 at The Oncenter in Syracuse, N.Y. Much like the USBC Open Championships, the new look puts the Women’s Championships inside convention centers with speciallyconstructed lanes, vendor areas and seating for 1,000 spectators. Until 2010, the Women’s Championships was held in traditional bowling centers when it was not contested at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. (every third year since 1997). Construction crews moved into The Oncenter in February, and it took six weeks to transform the building into a state-of-the-art 48-lane bowling venue for the Women’s Championships, which will run for 88 consecutive days from April 7 until July 3. The venue includes the world’s largest mobile scoreboard, a squad room and office space. The tournament’s three-division, all-handicap format also was well-received, and in 2011 the first class of defending champions put their titles on the line. Welcome to Syracuse Built for more fun The three divisions for bowlers, based on skill level, are: Diamond – Averages of 180 and above (handicap is based on 220) Ruby – Averages of 150-179 (handicap based on 180) Sapphire – Averages of 149 and below (handicap based on 150) Prizes also will be awarded for the top overall scratch scores. More than 30,000 bowlers are expected to head to Syracuse in 2011 to compete in team, doubles and singles, usually taking part in the three-game team event the first day and six games of doubles and singles on the next. The Women’s Championships, which was contested for the first time in 1916, is open to all female USBC members. The event is making its 10th overall trip to New York state and third visit to Syracuse, where it was held in 1940 and 1954, attracting 1,185 and 4,538 teams, respectively.
