Bowlers come from all 50 states and several foreign countries f a s t 2011 facts The Women’s Championships features bowlers of all ages and skill levels, including the tournament’s oldest participant, Emma Hendrickson, who will compete in her 52nd consecutive event at age 102. Participation leader Mini Tvaska will make the trip to Syracuse to extend her record with her 65th tournament appearance. Championships The first Women’s Championships was conducted in St. Louis in 1916. Held in the six-lane Washington Recreation Parlor over two days, 40 bowlers on eight teams competed for a $225 prize fund. In 2011, more than 6,000 teams will compete for a prize fund expected to approach $2 million. Squad times for team event are 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Squad times for doubles and singles events are 7 a.m., 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. It takes a team of at least 30 carpenters, electricians and laborers approximately six weeks to construct the 48 lanes needed for the event. When the tournament is completed, it takes about five days to dismantle the venue. A hosting community can expect to realize an economic boost of approximately $40 million during the course of the tournament. The Women’s Championships makes its third trip to Syracuse and 10th visit to the Empire State. The tournament previously was held in Syracuse in 1940 and 1954. Both events were held at the Jefferson Bowling Academy and attracted 1,185 and 4,538 teams, respectively. The Women’s Championships has been held in 56 different cities since it began in 1916.
