JANE MACLEISH LANDSCAPESwashington, d.c.Jane MacLeish was born and raised in England, whereearly in life she became interested in gardens andgardening. Her parents, both avid gardeners, encouragedher talents as she worked alongside them in their gardensin London and Wiltshire. She came to the United Statesin 1963, settling in Washington, D.C. After studyinglandscape design and apprenticing with several ofWashington’s outstanding gardeners and designers, shefounded Jane MacLeish Landscapes in 1977, specializingin residential garden design. The firm’s projects, rangingfrom large country estates to intimate urban sanctuaries, are highly individualized. The designs incorporate subtlequalities of shadow and light and contrasting textures inplant material, and they seamlessly meld architectureand landscape. MacLeish’s goal is always to establishrobust and individual character, motion and repose, andrestraint and control of color, and to infuse a spiritualsense into every garden. MacLeish also believes stronglythat the process of making a garden should be fun forall involved, and that the joy of the process somehowmanifests itself in the garden.72LEADING RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE PROFESSIONALSSurrounded by profuse plantings of holly, laurel, rhododendron, camellias, and peonies, and accented by a colorful ceramic water wall in the rear, this tranquil water garden is one of five belonging to a private residence in Washington, D.C.
