Hinkley Point C |Update on and Proposed Changes to Preferred ProposalsBridgwaterJunction 24 sitepreviously consultedupon by EDF EnergyJunction 24‘Somerfield’ siteNorthPethertonFigure 1 – The Junction 24 site previously consulted upon and the 'Somerfield' site near M5 Junction 24split east/west across two detached areas that are separated bythe road that passes through the Huntworth Business Park. Weare considering using both the eastern and western parts ofthe site.EDF Energy considers that the ‘Somerfield’ site could be used as apark and ride and freight management facility at Junction 24during the construction of Hinkley Point C.Given the existing infrastructure already available on the‘Somerfield’ site, it could be used earlier than the other proposedassociated development sites. We are therefore considering usingthe ‘Somerfield’ site before the other park and ride sites and thefreight management facility are built.Until the Junction 23 site becomes available, the ‘Somerfield’ sitewould provide up to 1,300 parking spaces and up to 140 HGVholding spaces. A temporary induction centre, with 75 car parkingspaces, and a temporary consolidation facility for courier deliverieswould also be located on the ‘Somerfield’ site. The ‘Somerfield’site would start operations as part of the Hinkley Point C Projectafter consent was granted to build the new power station.number of parking spaces at the Junction 24 ‘Somerfield’ sitewould be reduced to 698 and the HGV holding spaces would bereduced to 55, numbers previously consulted on in our Stage 2Update Consultation. The temporary induction centre andtemporary consolidation facility for courier deliveries would alsobe removed from the ‘Somerfield’ site and located at Junction 23as previously consulted upon.Until the Junction 23 associated development site becomes fullyoperational, HGVs using the ‘Somerfield’ site would use tworoutes to travel to the Hinkley Point C site (Figure 4). One routewould be via the M5 motorway from Junction 24 to Junction 23and then along ‘HGV Route 1’ in the Stage 2 UpdateConsultation. The second route would be ‘HGV Route 2’ in theStage 2 Update Consultation.Once the Junction 23 associated development site becomes fullyoperational, HGVs using the ‘Somerfield’ site would be expectedto revert to ‘HGV Route 2’.The ‘Somerfield’ site would be available for another commercialpurpose once it is no longer required by EDF Energy.Once the Junction 23 facilities become fully operational, the5
