The Ulamªa define harªam(unlawful) as an act whichShari‘ahhas commanded us in strict terms to reject and hasdescribed the doer of it as liable to punishment in this world or the next. Examples ofunlawful acts are murder, adultery, drinking wine, gambling, seizing the property of anorphan or giving less measure while weighing. Guardians must accustom their children at anearly stage to fulfil their duties and to stay away from the unlawful. Teach them theinjunctions of the lawful and the unlawful so that they take these things in their stride and besafe from Hell-Fire.341 [172] Remember, only that is lawful what Allah has allowed and all that isunlawful that He has forbidden. A ruling by man cannot turn the lawful into unlawful or theother way about; a person who holds a contrary opinion is irreligious and an atheist. He whoobeys such a person is also a criminal.342 [173] The Jews and Christians delegated power andauthority to their monks and popes to declare the unlawful as lawful and the lawful asforbidden. It may have been sufferingfrom a chronic disease for a long time or may have acquired it recently or may haveconsumed some poisonous substance. Therefore, its meat may be harmful to eat.(ii) By instinct, blood is repulsive. It houses germs. Like the dead animal, it is also harmful andinjurious to health.(iii) The flesh of swine is inherently unclean and unhealthy. A peculiar worm that infects thestomach of the eater disturbs the digestive system; swine flesh is slow to digest.
