Basketball Australia Annual Report <strong>2008</strong>Basketball Australia Annual Report <strong>2008</strong>CoachesDevelopingNew Coach Accreditation andPhoto: Kangaroo Photo28 www.basketball.net.auA total of 4,208 accredited coaches currently sit in Basketball Australia’snational database - 3,805 Level 1 coaches and 403 with Level 2accreditation. 1,605 are females and 2,603 are males, which shows thegreat job associations are doing to qualify their coaches.Development CurriculumIn <strong>2008</strong> there were two workshops involving coachaccreditation and development curriculum focusgroups. The workshops have involved developinga new, relevant and user-friendly approach toaccrediting coaches from the community levelthrough to national league and internationallevels. The focus group will continue to work withconsultants and the Australian Sports Commissionto develop resources and to come up with the finalproduct for coach accreditation and development.Interstate Coaching ExperienceThe 10th <strong>annual</strong> Interstate Coaching Experience(ICE) was conducted in Canberra. ICE provides adevelopment opportunity for nominated coachesand comprises sessions with Canberra CapitalsWNBL program as well as the AIS Men’s andWomen’s programs. The <strong>2008</strong> ICE was facilitatedby Basketball Australia’s Manager of Player andCoach Development, Patrick Hunt. Attendees for the<strong>2008</strong> experience included: Daniel Gibson (ACT), DaleGleeson (NSW), Leigh Bathman (VIC), Keith Bragg(TAS), Tom MacDonald (SA), Brett Banting (WA),Blair Smith (QLD), Trish Atkinson (ACT) and PaulLankford (VIC).Dr. Adrian Hurley ScholarshipThe Dr. Adrian Hurley Scholarship was establishedto reward one of our hardworking NITP NetworkCoaches and to encourage promising NITP Coachesas well as providing an additional educationalopportunity for coaches. Selection is based on aresult of efforts in the NITP, support of programs andpotential to coach at an elite level in the future. Thescholarship provides an opportunity to attend theAIS Basketball Program for a five-day period. Whileat the AIS, attendees observe individual and teampractice sessions with the AIS men’s and women’sprogram, have an opportunity to view the latestsport science program, access the National SportInformation Centre and gain knowledge of the latestresources, and where possible attend CanberraCapitals, Canberra Gunners and ACT NITP programs.The <strong>2008</strong> Dr Adrian Hurley Scholarship was awardedto Peter Cunningham from Basketball VictoriaCountry.Adaptive Coaching WorkshopWith the revamp of the coach curriculum, one ofthe units that is included at each level of coaching isAdaptive Coaching. This includes much of what wascovered in the “Coaching Athletes with Disabilities”module that was optional under the previousNCAS system. Adaptive Coaching has been made amandatory unit, at each level, and will be developedinto a core skill. In <strong>2008</strong> a workshop was conductedat MSAC to discuss barriers of performance, assessingthe potential of the athlete, basic skills, complexskills and team skills.
