Bin briefIBM internshipA UQ postgraduate studenthas been given the opportunity<strong>of</strong> a lifetime winning aninternship at the prestigiousIBM research centre inAmerica.PhD student Xingzhi Sun,from the School <strong>of</strong> InformationTechnology <strong>and</strong> ElectricalEngineering, will spend threemonths at IBM’s TJ WatsonResearch Centre in New York,working with some <strong>of</strong> the topresearchers in the area <strong>of</strong> datamining.Only six such internshipswere h<strong>and</strong>ed out in Australialast year <strong>and</strong> Mr Sun was the<strong>only</strong> Queensl<strong>and</strong> recipient.Mr Sun, an internationalstudent from Beijing in China,said the opportunity was toogood to turn down <strong>and</strong> he washappy to put his studies onhold for the next few months.Rehabilitation on-lineUQ’s new websitefor people withdisabilities is thefirst <strong>of</strong> its kind forQueensl<strong>and</strong>.An exciting new online resourcedeveloped at UQ is set to helppeople restart their lives after havingan accident resulting in seriousinjury.In a Queensl<strong>and</strong> first, theDisability Lifestyles information <strong>and</strong>communication website brings adifferent focus to issues <strong>of</strong> majorinterest to people with disabilities.It aims to bridge rehabilitation <strong>and</strong>active participation in the communityfor people who have had severeinjuries, such as spinal injury oracquired brain injury.The website is a communityproject <strong>of</strong> UQ’s Centre <strong>of</strong> NationalResearch on Disability <strong>and</strong>Rehabilitation Medicine (CONROD)<strong>and</strong> was <strong>of</strong>ficially launched on May27 at the Brisbane ConventionCentre.CONROD’s Chair, AdjunctPr<strong>of</strong>essor Graham Hughes, said thewebsite would be an importantresource for the many Queensl<strong>and</strong>erswhose lives had been changed bysevere injury.“They have experienced a newreality in their daily lives <strong>and</strong> we hopethis website will support them byproviding new options <strong>and</strong> links withothers in the community facingsimilar challenges,” he said.The website <strong>of</strong>fers ideas on sevenkey lifestyle areas, including locallearning, working <strong>and</strong> recreationalopportunities.The site also <strong>of</strong>fers an interactivediscussion area where people can askquestions <strong>and</strong> exchange usefulinformation about activities orfacilities. A Personal Stories sectionshares the challenges experienced bydisabled people as they re-engagewith the community.CONROD developed the websitethrough UQ’s Corporate WebServices, in close consultation withthe disability community. Extensiveuser research was conducted on thewebsite’s feasibility.The project was co-ordinated byGSA Information Consultants whichspecialises in IT for people with disabilities.The content was written by aperson with a disability with input fromQueensl<strong>and</strong> Advocacy Inc.
