Act 5:1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.Act 5:2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and putit at the apostles' feet.Act 5:3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the HolySpirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?Act 5:4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."Act 5:5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what hadhappened.Act 5:6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.Act 5:7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.Act 5:8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that isthe price."Act 5:9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men whoburied your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."Act 5:10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding herdead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.Act 5:11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.Reaction from J Vernon McGee on Acts 5:1 (misses the dispensational point)Act 5:1DEATH OF ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRAIt is obvious that they were imitating Barnabas. They saw that he got a certain amount of publicity, and theythought it would be nice if they could get that kind of publicity too. They wanted it.I have found that there are people who will give in order to be noticed. I recall a meeting with businessmen inPasadena when I was a pastor there. We were planning to start a youth organization, and we were askingthese men to give donations for the founding of this movement. It was decided that donations would not bemade public.I was informed that one of these men would contribute very little if he were not given the opportunity to speakout publicly to let everybody know how much he was giving. It is quite interesting that he contributed a smallamount. After the meeting he confided in one of the men that he had intended to give about ten times thatamount, but he had expected to be able to stand up or at least raise his hand to indicate how much he hadgiven. You see, pride is still in human nature today. That was the condition of Ananias and Sapphira.Commentary from Stam on Joses Barnabas 27"And Moses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, The son ofconsolation) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,"Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet" --Acts 4:36,37.Here a particular case is advanced: that of Joses Barnabas. It was the apostles who had named himBarnabas, or "Son of Consolation," evidently because he had been sympathetic to their cause and had helpedin it, for the word "consolation" comes from the Greek parakletos, "one called alongside [to help]."It has been suggested that this Joses Barnabas may be the Joseph Barsabas who, with Matthias and theeleven apostles, had followed the Lord Jesus from His baptism by John until His ascension into heaven (Acts1:21-26). If this is so it may be that he was not appointed as the twelfth apostle because he had not yet cast inhis lot unreservedly with Messiah's followers.27 Stam, Acts, Dispensationally ConsideredActs Page 42 January 23, 2011 18:07
At any rate, this Joses Barnabas now forsakes all to join the Spirit-filled throng at Jerusalem and is sorespected and beloved that he is later sent to look into the reports of the conversion of the Gentiles at Antioch, from whence he sends for Saul of Tarsus (Acts 11:19-26) and finally becomes, with Paul, an apostle of theGentiles (Gal. 2:9).THE CASE OF ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA (also from Stam)It is sometimes supposed that the sin of Ananias and Sapphira marks the beginning of the breakdown of thedivine communism practiced in early Acts. This is not so, for while these two deceivers departed seriously from the Godgiven program, they were strickendead immediately and the program continued unchanged.Nor must it be thought that Ananias and Sapphira were slain simply for lying. All of Adam's children have beenguilty of telling lies--often much greater ones--but all have not been stricken dead for it.What we have here is rather a foretaste of conditions which will prevail in the kingdom, when any deviationfrom the divine order will be visited by immediate judgment.Ananias and Sapphira were not slain for dishonesty alone, but for dishonestly keeping back part of their goods, and so violating the standards of the kingdom. They were stricken dead for trying to join the Messianic Church while deceitfully holding on to privateinvestments. Note carefully the wording of Verse 3:"But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart TO LIE TO THE HOLY GHOST, AND TO KEEPBACK PART OF THE PRICE OF THE LAND?"Matthew Henry’s Comments on Acts 5:1-11 (like almost everyone, he doesn’t see thedispensational issue)The sin of Ananias and Sapphira was, that they were ambitious of being thought eminent disciples, when theywere not true disciples. Hypocrites may deny themselves, may forego their worldly advantage in one instance, with a prospect of finding their account in something else. They were covetous of the wealth of the world, anddistrustful of God and his providence. They thought they might serve both God and mammon. They thought todeceive the apostles. The Spirit of God in Peter discerned the principle of unbelief reigning in the heart ofAnanias. But whatever Satan might suggest, he could not have filled the heart of Ananias with this wickednesshad he not been consenting. The falsehood was an attempt to deceive the Spirit of truth, who so manifestlyspoke and acted by the apostles. The crime of Ananias was not his retaining part of the price of the land; hemight have kept it all, had he pleased; but his endeavouring to impose upon the apostles with an awful lie, from a desire to make a vain show, joined with covetousness. But if we think to put a cheat upon God, we shallput a fatal cheat upon our own souls. How sad to see those relations who should quicken one another to thatwhich is good, hardening one another in that which is evil! And this punishment was in reality mercy to vastnumbers. It would cause strict self-examination, prayer, and dread of hypocrisy, covetousness, and vain-glory,and it should still do so. It would prevent the increase of false professors. Let us learn hence how hatefulfalsehood is to the God of truth, and not only shun a direct lie, but all advantages from the use of doubtfulexpressions, and double meaning in our speech. They wanted to be a part of this committed group of Jews but did not want to lose all oftheir money in the process.a) Communism demands full surrender – in the kingdom program, this was (externally)done willingly. (Our country may be going that direction where we must go alongunder duress!)b) There is a parallel to men today who want the praise of people and the expectation ofheaven!c) Men do not like your devotion to the Word of God. We may soon lose all of ourprotection from persecution for our beliefs or practicesd) And this will be a part of Satanic communism! Many believers just do not want to accept that there was a commune in early Acts.e) Yet is clearly taughtf) We are clearly not under this at all (NIV).
