GENERAL DESCRIPTIONSince its introduction, the Racal InstrumentsDigital Radio Test Set, 6103, has set newindustry standards in cellular radio testing. It is ahigh performance, portable, fully integratedinstrument designed for the production andmaintenance of modern digital mobile telephones.Aimed at GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 the 6103has been selected by most of the world’s mobilemanufacturers for field service operations.Building on this success Racal Instruments will beintroducing further system options to address newand emerging markets. The user controls have been carefully designedto allow operators of any skill level to successfullytest and fault find mobile phones. A ‘no buttonstart’ feature allows them to be tested rapidlywithout even touching the instrument. Anothermode provides all key measurements to beviewed simultaneously with any reading out oflimits being highlighted, making adjustmentsimplicity itself. In all, the 6103 offers five testingmodes to suit any user and application.• Single Tests• Automatic Sequences• Multimode• Unsynchronized Mode• Remote OperationThe use of a large LCD display coupled withintuitive, streamlined soft keys, ensures that theuser can select the required operation, changeparameter values and read test results, quicklyand clearly without the need for an external PC ormonitor. The use of soft keys and a spinwheelalso allows the user to move quickly and logicallythrough the menu structure and select the desiredoperation without any ambiguity.BERPhaseErrorPowerProfileSummaryAudio SpeechModeMultiMode : Modulation Spectrum10100-10-20d-30B-40-50-6015 JAN 2001 12:24:59-70-500 -400 -300 -200 -100 0 100 200 300 400 500kHzStatus : IMSI Detached GSM 900 RXQU AL : 0 RXLEV : 23GPIB : 20Std : INT13 Rslts: PARALLEL Offsets : 3.00 dBReal time displays for simple adjustments withsuperimposed limit maskTCH ARFCN62TCH LeveldBm-85.0TCH Slot4MS Power7More...EXITSPEEDWith the decreasing cost of modern mobile phonesand the ever growing numbers of subscribers, rapidtest times are essential. To achieve this, the 6103offers an integrated testing approach. For example,a single transmitter test can take the 5 keymeasurements of power, frequency, power profile, time alignment and modulation error in under 2seconds. At the same time a full suite of graphs isavailable to view proper profile, phase trajectory andmodulation spectrum. This integrated philosophy isalso repeated for receiver testing ensuring maximumtest throughput.THE FUTURETestInformationPhaseErrorPowerProfileModulationSpectrumPrintScreenRunning : Transmitter TestTest StatusMeasurem ent MinFreq. New testsequences can be generated from the frontpanel using a special learning facility and thenstored on the memory card. In this way test canbe selected, limits and parameters changed, andprinting controlled, guaranteeing total controland repeatability of testing.Other forms of files can also be stored on thememory cards. These include speech phrasesand test results. The PCMCIA version 2 industrystandard card and DOS formatting allows directtransfer of files to a suitable PC. Two socketsare provided so that files are easily duplicatedand test sequence files can be convenientlyseparated from results and parameter files.COMPREHENSIVE SIGNALING PROTOCOLAll signaling between the Test Set and themobile-under-test is completely automatic sothat the user does not need to have detailedknowledge of signaling standards. The 6103even knows when to use phase 2 protocol.Individual signaling procedures can be invokedincluding:• Location Updating• Call Set-up, MO & MT• Call Termination, MO & MT• Call Lost• Handover (inc Dual-Band)• Emergency Calls• Frequency Hopping• Encryption (A5/1 & A5/2)• Timing Advance• Cell Broadcast Messages• Point to Point SMS, MO & MT• Calling Party Identity• Fax Call, MO & MT• Bi-directional Data Cell, MO & MTADDITIONAL FACILITIES• Synchronization Output – A programmablesynchronization output allows externalequipment such as a spectrum analyzer or alogic analyzer to be triggered at any point in theGSM frame. Using this port, spurious signalscan be reviewed either out-of-band or duringthe unused slots.• Auxiliary RF Port – An auxiliary RF port is alsoprovided eliminating the need for externalcouplers and loads when used with other testequipment. It also allows short rangemonitoring of signals off-air.• Dual-Band Handover – With the introduction ofdual-band mobiles and with networks operatingon several bands, it is essential that phonescan Camp-on to the correct BCCH and behanded over from one band to another. The6103 can simulate a BCCH on either bandwhile handing over TCH in either direction.Range0 to 124CancelResetParameterSUPPORTCell Allocation TableParameterCurrent Bit 1Cell Allocation Table15 JAN 2001 11:24:571 5 10 15 2001 - 2021 - 4041 - 6061 - 8081 - 100101 - 120121 - 124Status : IMSI Detached GSM 900 RXQUAL : 0 RXLEV : 23GPIB : 20Std : INT13 Rslts: PARALLEL Offsets : 3.00 dBToggleBitAcceptParameters are easily modified to suit the applicationNot only is the 6103 good value for money, but ithas also been designed to be simple and economicto repair. OPTIONSThe 6103 in its basic form is a completeintegrated test set capable of performing the fullrange of measurements on a GSM mobile. Tocomplement this, Racal Instruments can supplya range of options and accessories whichsignificantly enhance the applications of the6103. A full list is provided on the back pagealong with ordering information.FREQUENCY STANDARDSUnder normal circumstances the suppliedfrequency standard is more than adequate, however in a laboratory or production situationhigher performance may be required. Theoptional internal standards can achievestabilities of up to 0.03 ppcm per year.Supplied Option O4E Option O4Fparameters. On completion, the user is presentedwith the numeric results and a pass/fail indicator. Ifappropriate, any graphic information can also beviewed.AUTOMATIC AND GO/NO GO TESTINGThe 6103 is ideal for both step by step fault or forfully automatic, GO/NO-GO testing. The automaticcapability offers a choice of running one of theinstrument’s built-in programs or a sequencecreated by the user. In this way it is possible toselect virtually any combination of tests withcomplete freedom of channel numbers, parametersand test limits. Test sequences can beautomatically entered to start by a location updateor a call set up. Using this facility it is possible tocarry out any series of tests without even touchingthe instrument. This is particularly attractive forhigh throughput, screening applications.Frequency: 13 MHz 10 MHz 10 MHzStability* ±1 x 10 -6/year±1 x 10 -7/year±3 x 10 -8/year0 to 50°C:

the user recognizable ‘pictures’ of theperformance of the mobile under test, as ithappens. As a further aid to the operator, the normal GSMtest limits are marked on the bargraphs. If areading exceeds these limits, the bar itself turnssolid black making a potential fault easilyrecognized. While in Multimode, most parameters are easilychanged such as channel, slot number, mobilepower and RF level. The rotary control can nowbe used to continuously update the RF level formanual sensitivity testing. Any protocolnecessary to perform the changes isautomatically generated making the 6103 veryintuitive to operate.UNSYNCHRONIZED MODEAnother mode similar to the Multimode is theunsynchronized mode. This provides the userwith all the diagnostic facilities for testing RFmodules and partially functioning phones. It alsoensures that the instrument can be used with themanufacturer’s specific test modes where thetransmitter or receiver can be enabled without aSIM or any network signaling.mobile adjustment or for mobile ‘local’ control, theunsynchronized mode can be used. This has thebenefit that no time is wasted waiting for theprotocol to synchronize and set up a call. For transmitter testing, the instrument willautomatically find any signal in the GSM 850,900, 1800 or 1900 bands and then continuouslydisplay all key measurements, including powerprofile and modulation spectrum graphs. Aspecial IQ mode filter can be used for optimizinga mobile’s modulator settings. For receiver testing, the 6103 can generate arange of test signals including a valid controlchannel, a bursting traffic channel or anunmodulated carrier. The unsynchronized mode is particularly suitablefor making adjustments to a mobile’s freerunning frequency standard or to its transmitterpower steps.REMOTE OPERATIONFor production test systems where speed andcontrol are paramount, the 6103 offers full1EEE488 remote control of all tests andreadings, including graph data. Remote controlof the multimode means that transmitter andreceiver measurements can be performedconcurrently and parameters and settings arequickly changed with simple commands. For
