RISER ProgramResearch and Instructional Strategies ForEngineering Retention — RISERThe RISER Program is sponsored by NSF STEP grant. TheRISER program offers two main areas of emphasis. First,it is designed for students admitted into the College ofEngineering that will begin in Math 130 (Pre-calculus) Fallsemester. The program offers the Math 130 students theopportunity to take Pre-calculus together with the sameinstructor along with Economics 201. This will allow thestudents to form study groups and community. The RISERProgram offers, by application and selective admission, aSummer RISER Math Camp in August. Students may applyfor the RISER Math Camp while on campus at Orientationin June. In order to apply, students need ACT math of 27 orSAT math of 660. The 24 students selected for RISER MathCamp will be given intensive Math preparation in hopes thatthey will move up into Math 141 (Calculus I) for Fall semester.RISER students also have the opportunity to live together oncampus in the RISER Living Learning Community. Second,the RISER program also emphasizes undergraduate researchopportunities for the women in the Honors program. Honorswomen can be placed on research as early as spring offreshmen year.RISER Learning CommunityRISER Living and Learning Community assists engineeringstudents to develop a strong foundation in math skills toenhance their success in the College of Engineering.RISER Living and Learning Community is open to studentsadmitted to the College of Engineering. Participants in RISERmust be eligible to take Math 130 during their first semester atUT and have an ACT math score of 25, 26 or 27, or SAT mathscore of 620-660.Placement requirements can be found at Math Placement(www.math.utk.edu/ugrad/placement.html).Residents of this community will share study sessions andsocial activities in addition to math and Economics RISERclass sections.Restrictions:College of Engineering.the College of Engineering.RISER Math CampRISER Math camp is designed for incoming freshmen with anACT math score of 27 or SAT math score of 660.
