new board membersTwo new members and an alumni representative were recently appointed to serveon the board of trustees of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The responsibilitiesof USP’s board of trustees include approving the University’s strategicplans and ensuring their consistency with the institution’s mission and goals. Thenew members are:Art FennellWith more than 20years as a newsveteran, Art Fennellhas received nearly100 awards foroutstanding journalismand communityservice. Fennell’s current assignment onCN8, The Comcast Network is anchor andmanaging editor of Art Fennell Reports,an honest, candid, and interactive look atthe news, issues, and events that havepeople talking.Most recently, Fennell served as anchorand managing editor for CN8’s 7 p.m. and10 p.m. newscasts. In addition, he heldvarious positions with WCAU-TV as wellas with WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va.;WSAV-TV in Savannah, Ga.; WCBD-TV inCharleston, S. C.; WBTW-TV in Florence,S.C.; and The South Carolina EducationalTelevision Network.In August 1995, Fennell was electedpresident of the National Association ofBlack Journalists (NABJ), the largest professionalorganization of journalists of color inthe world. During his tenure as president ofthe NABJ, Fennell was selected by Ebonymagazine as one of the top 100 most influentialAfrican-Americans in the country.In 2001, he founded The Arthur FennellFoundation (www.artfennellfoundation.org), a public, charitable, non-profitorganization. The foundation is committedto raising funds and awareness to assistcommunity-based organizations dealingwith disease, education, and prevention indiverse, underserved populations. Eachyear the foundation hosts the Art FennellCelebrity Billiards Championship as itsprimary fundraiser.Born and raised in Bennettsville, S.C.,Fennell is one of 12 children. He is married,has two daughters and currently resides inNew Jersey. Fennell holds a communicationsdegree from South Carolina State University.Alex GorskyAlex Gorsky wasappointed head ofpharma NorthAmerica and chiefexecutive officer ofNovartis PharmaceuticalsCorporation(NPC) in the fall of 2005. He is responsiblefor North American pharmaceutical operations,which include both the United Statesand Canada.Since joining NPC in 2004 as chiefoperating officer and head of general medicines,Gorsky has overseen the continuedgrowth of Novartis’ industry-leading cardiovascularfranchise, which includes blockbusterproducts Diovan ® and Lotrel ® . Healso oversaw the launch of Enablex ® , aproduct for over-active bladder, and completeda deal with Procter & Gamble tocopromote and further develop the product.He was also involved in the launch ofFocalin ® XR for ADHD. He was instrumentalin developing NPC’s Medicare strategyand oversaw a realignment of the company’ssales force. A champion of diversity in theworkplace, he created NPC’s CEO Diversity& Inclusion Award.Prior to joining Novartis, Gorsky wasbased in London as company group chairmanfor Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceuticalbusiness in Europe, the Middle East, andAfrica. Prior to that, Gorsky spent 15 yearsin various sales, marketing, and managementroles at Janssen Pharmaceutica, aJohnson & Johnson unit, and was based inNew Jersey.Gorsky holds a 1982 bachelor of sciencedegree from the U.S. Military Academy inWest Point, New York, and spent six yearsin the U.S. Army, finishing his career withthe rank of captain. During that same time,he earned the Ranger Tab, Airborne Wings,and served in Europe, the United States, andPanama. He obtained a master’s in businessadministration from the Wharton School ofthe University of Pennsylvania in 1996.Col. S. RogerWetherill III,MSC (Ret),P’68Col. S. Roger WetherillIII, MSC (Ret),P’68 is a retired armypharmacy officer withover 24 years of hospital pharmacy experience.He has served in Vietnam, Germany,and numerous stateside hospital assignments.His civilian education includes amaster of science with a major in nuclearpharmacy from University of Michigan in1975. He is certified by the Board of PharmaceuticalSpecialties and is a Board CertifiedNuclear Pharmacist. He holds licensesin four states.His military schooling includes Commandand General Staff College and theNational War College. During his militarycareer he was awarded a Bronze Star; aMeritorious Service Medal, three Oak LeafClusters; an Army Commendation Medal,two Oak Leaf Clusters; and an ArmyAchievement Medal.For the past 10 years, he has been employedby Happy Harry’s in Newark,Delaware. He is listed in the Marquis’sWho’s Who in the World, 1992, and Who’sWho in Medicine and Healthcare, 2002.Wetherill has been part of the USPalumni reunion committee for the past sixyears and currently serves as chair on thealumni nominations committee. The WetherillLegacy consists of four of the foundersof the college in 1821, the first chairman ofthe board of trustees who also served as thesecond vice president of the college, threeboard of trustees between 1824 and 1960,and five alumni between 1842 and 1997.
usp usp bulletin: bulletin article board title page 17bulletin boardStudy-Elsewhere Programming ProvidesNew Opportunities for USP StudentsUshering in a new era of opportunity for students and faculty,University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and The University of theArts ceremoniously signed an exchange agreement on Oct. 19, 2006,that opened the door for students to take for-credit classes at eachuniversity’s campus for the 2007 spring semester. The announcementwas the first of two new initiatives that became available to USPstudents for “study-elsewhere” programming in spring 2007.“It’s unquestionable that the arts always predated science, andin fact, the innovation of all science has been in the arts,” USPPresident PHILIP P. GERBINO P’69, PharmD’70 said. “It’s appropriatethat 230-plus years later we finally said, ‘I think it’s importantthat we mix the arts and the sciences again so that we can create ageneration of innovators, people who are committed to the healthcare and discovery of this nation.’…That’s our commitment to ournext generation.”Intended to enrich the curricula of both institutions by exposingstudents to coursework not included at their home school and topromote collaboration among students and faculty, up to 10 studentsfrom each school are eligible for the exchange each semester.Paying tuition to their home institution, students may take up to 18credits of coursework at the away campus over six semesters.“It’s unquestionable that the arts alwayspredated science, and in fact, the innovationof all science has been in the arts.”In an effort to provide a more traditional study abroad programthat would fit into a USP student’s requirements, USP signed anotherexchange program that also starts in spring 2007. In joining forceswith New York University’s Study Abroad Program, USP studentscan now study at NYU campuses in Asia, Africa, and Europe for asemester or a year.“The NYU exchange agreement is a wonderful opportunity forour students to gain an understanding of the global realities in ahealth care world that knows no geographical boundaries,” saidBARBARA BYRNE, PhD, vice president for academic affairs.“Exposing students to a foreign environment will significantly helpthem understand the disparities that exist in health care.”The NYU program’s advantages include charging the same tuitionas USP charges, course offerings that will count as USP courses in thesame disciplines, and, perhaps most importantly, no graduationdelay, since the London campus offers appropriate courses in sciencefor second-year students.“All these programs have the same aim, to expand educationalopportunities for the students,” said ROBERT BOUGHNER, PhD,chair of the Department of Humanities. Boughner will also workindividually with students to tailor a study-elsewhere experience ifone of the others does not fit their interests and concerns. “Studentsmust have the chance to see themselves from the perspective ofanother culture so that they can learn both how all people are thesame and, more importantly, how all people are different.”USP President PHILIP P. GERBINO P’69, PharmD’70The USP-UArts exchange agreement adds to an expandingmenu of programs for students that aims to fit into a curriculumthat does not leave much room for flexibility.Since 2000, USP has offered students Summer Travel StudiesPrograms that provide abroad opportunities but not in thetraditional sense of study abroad programs. The three-weekprograms combine lectures with travel to such locales as Greece,Italy, England, and Puerto Rico, as well as the National Parks ofthe Southwest United States, and occur during summer breaks.One advantage is that the programs satisfy the general educationrequirement; however, they do require an additional feeoutside of the tuition.UArts President Miguel Angel Corzo shows off his USP lab coat, presented tohim at the exchange agreement signing by President PHILIP P.
