usp bulletin: bulletin board page 19New Department Trains Students forPharmaceutical and Health Care IndustryWith an eye toward training studentsfor the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry through graduate andundergraduate degree programs, USPannounced the formation of the DepartmentOf Pharmaceutical and HealthcareBusiness for the fall of 2006. The department operates under theauspices of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.“The overall goal is to place students in industry or educatethem for further advancement on the graduate level,” said Dr.GLENN ROSENTHAL EdD, MBA, MA, department chair. “Forundergraduates, it is to get them entry-level sales and marketingpositions.”Rosenthal, who has over 25 years of hands-on experience inthe industry, leads the growing department of six faculty membersand over 200 students in the delivery of bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees. Students earning a bachelor of science degreewill combine coursework in science, business, and the health careindustry. Students will learn to appreciate and understand thescientific, professional, economic, and practice-related factors thatwill lead to leadership positions in the industry. In the graduatelevelprogram, there are three main components: an evening MBAprogram, a weekend executive MBA program, and an onlinedegree program. The evening MBA program can be either fulltimeor part-time, depending upon the needs of the individualstudent, while the executive program is for those who have aminimum of four years in the industry and want to broaden theirknowledge base for advancement or a career shift. The onlineprogram has a similar curriculum to the executive program andoffers the convenience of flexibility.Students from the program, which began as a BS degree in2000, already have gone on to work at some of the top pharmaceuticalcompanies, including Pfizer, Merck, Wyeth, AstraZeneca,Novartis, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and ExcelleRx,as well in other fields such as IMS Health, a data collectioncompany, and Colorcon, a chemical specialty company.“We believe we are the place to come to if you are seriousabout your career in the pharmaceutical and health care industry,”Rosenthal said.The 2nd Annual USP Race for Humanity is set for March 31,2007.
