This is the sixth edition of our Directory of Monmouth County 

Mental Health Professional and Agencies, compiled and 

distributed by the Mental Health Association of Monmouth 

County as a public service. No such listing previously existed in 

Monmouth County. 

Research undertaken by the National and State Mental 

Health Association revealed the people in need of mental 

health services consult their primary care physicians, clergy 

or their local Mental Health Association. The Mental Health 

Association of Monmouth County receives over 3,000 

information and referral calls annually. 

This book has been sent free of charge to local physicians, 

churches, and synagogues, treatment providers, schools, 

libraries, businesses and members of the Mental Health 

Association and Mental Health America. We hope that you 

find the Directory to be informative and useful for referring or 

locating mental health services in our county. Please mention

Mental health difficulties are generally caused by biochemical 

changes in the brain and can result in very mild or severe 

disturbances of thinking, feeling and/or behavior. These 

disturbances can be experienced by the person as being simply 

uncomfortable or they can interrupt the ability to cope with 

the demands of life. At least one in five children and adults 

are affected by mental illness in any given year; however, less 

than one third seek help despite the fact that treatment works. 

With proper care and treatment, symptoms can be reduced or 

eliminated. 

The MHAMC was forced nearly sixty years ago to provide 

advocacy, education and a helping hand to children, adults 

and their families affected by mental health difficulties. Most 

of MHA programs and services are free and open to the 

community. 

Information and Referral services guide callers to the 

appropriate professional or community mental health resource 

and provide literature on mental illnesses 

MHA’s Directory of Mental Health Professionals and Agencies 

is available at no charge to the community. 

Speakers Bureau educates the public about mental illnesses and 

the effectiveness of treatment. 

Family Consultation Program provides professional 

consultation to families in order to educate them about how 

to cope with mental illness affecting their loved one, family 

dynamics and community resources. 

Family & Friends is a support group which provides ongoing 

emotional support and encouragement to family members. 

Wrap-Around Services Program coordinates and purchases an 

array of services and supports to children with special emotional 

needs and their families. 

Low Cost Psychotherapy Network allows children and adults 

who otherwise could not afford psychotherapy to receive 

treatment from a network of community therapists at a fraction 

of their regular fees.

Time to Grow An early intervention program, in collaboration 

with the Keansburg Middle and High Schools, that promotes 

the value of education and personal responsibility. We provide 

individual and group counseling and outreach to parents and 

their teens. 

Intensive In-Community Services Provides in-home 

individual and family therapy for children referred by approved 

Partnership for Children entities as a part of a plan of care. 

The purpose of the intervention is to strengthen the family, 

to provide stability and to preserve the family unit in the 

community 

Keansburg Resource Network The Network has three primary 

functions: 1) to provide information and referral for a myriad 

of social problems through an easily accessible resource center; 

2) to coordinate provision of an array of free social services 

provided by local agencies and organization at multiple 

sites within Keansburg; 3) to act as a center for community 

involvement where individuals and organizations can partner to 

develop sponsored activities. 

Partners in Independence is a Supportive Housing program 

that provides necessary supports to adults with psychiatric 

disorders so that they may achieve personal goals and maintain 

independent residence in the community. 

Family Crisis Intervention Program assists children with 

behavioral disorders and their families to make changes in the 

behaviors of youth in a manner that increases their academic 

productivity and reduces conflict within the family. 

Grandview Social Service Program provides a broad array of 

community development, social service and recreational services 

to residents of a large affordable housing complex.

THERAPY 

What are the different kinds of therapy? 

There are many different approaches to therapy, all of which 

can be successful and therapists often use more than one. The 

type of approach is determined by the clinician’s expertise, 

preferences of the client, and type of issue to be addressed. 

The relationship with the therapist is more important that the 

theory or approach used. 

What does it cost? 

Fees vary considerably by profession, but studies have shown 

no direct relationship between the cost of therapy and its 

effectiveness. You may call a therapist or agency and ask about 

their fees before you make an appointment. Third Party 

insurance often dictates and pays a large portion of the fee. 

Community mental health centers and family agencies generally 

have a sliding fee scale based on income. 

How long does therapy last? 

The length of therapy is determined by you and the therapist. 

Therapy can last anywhere from a few sessions to several years 

depending on the goals of the client. At best, conclusion of 

therapy occurs by mutual decision of the client and therapist. 

Third Party insurance often limits the number of sessions paid 

for during a calendar year. This information should be obtained 

at the start of therapy. 

What if I don’t like my therapist? 

If you do not like your therapist, then this is not the therapist 

for you. Your relationship with the therapist is the most 

important factor for creating improvement. 

However, if during the course of the therapy you do not like 

some of the things the therapist says or does, it is important 

that you talk about it openly or directly. A good therapist 

should remain open to hearing and exploring all the feelings 

and thoughts the client has. 

What happens in therapy? 

People often enter therapy at times of stress, as a last resort 

and hope and expect that the therapist can somehow make it 

all right. This is a magical expectation. Therapy is work not

magic. It is essential that the client be an active collaborator in 

this process. In talking, the therapist does no make you well, 

but only guides you to discover things about yourself and to 

create positive change. 

How do I know if my therapy is working? 

You know if therapy is working if you have a better 

understanding of your feelings and behavior. In addition, you 

will know if you have moved toward the achievement of goals 

set at the beginning of therapy. 

At times during the process you may feel worse before you 

can feel better, as you become more aware of your feelings and 

thoughts. 

Being in therapy does not mean that you will live a problemfree 

life, but rather that you have learned more skills to cope 

with what comes your way. 

HOW TO FIND HELP THROUGH THERAPY 

Why do people consider using therapy? 

Therapy is a partnership between an individual and a 

professional who is licensed and trained to help people 

understand their feelings and assist them with changing their 

behavior. According to the National Institute of Mental 

Health, one-third of adults in the United States experience 

an emotional or substance abuse problem. Nearly 25% of 

the adult population suffers at some point from depression or 

anxiety. 

People often consider therapy under the following 

circumstances: 

• They feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of sadness 

and they lack happiness in their lives 

• Their emotional difficulties make it hard for them to 

function from day to day, i.e. worry, anxiety, panic attacks. 

• Their actions are harmful to themselves or to others. For 

instance, they drink too much alcohol and become overly 

aggressive. 

• They have a personal problem that they need the help of 

an outside perspective to identify, analyze and address the 

problem.

What does research show about the effectiveness of therapy? 

According to a research summary from the Stanford University 

School of Medicine, therapy effectively decreases patients’ 

depression and anxiety and related symptoms – such as pain, 

fatigue and nausea. Therapy has also been found to increase 

survival time for heart surgery and cancer patients, and it can 

have a positive effect on the body’s immune system. Research 

increasingly supports the idea that emotional and physical 

health are very closely linked and that therapy can improve a 

person’s overall health status. 

There is convincing evidence that most people who have at 

least several sessions of therapy are far better off than untreated 

individuals with emotional difficulties. One major study 

showed that 50% of patients noticeably improved after eight 

sessions while 75% of individuals in therapy improved by the 

end of six months. 

Therapy with children is similar in effectiveness to therapy with 

adults. 

How do I find a qualified therapist? 

Selecting a therapist is a highly personal matter. A professional 

who works very well with one individual may not be a good 

choice for another person. There are several ways to get referrals 

to qualified therapist, including the following: 

• Obtain a list of providers from your insurance company 

• Call the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County 

at 732-542-6422 

• Talk to close family members and friends for their 

recommendations, especially if they have had a good 

experience with therapy. 

• Ask your primary car physician for a referral. 

• Inquire at your church or synagogue 

Ideally, you will end up with more than one lead. Call and 

request the opportunity, either by phone or in person to 

“interview” the therapist. You should feel free to inquire about 

his/her experiences helping those in your same situation; at the 

level of training; and participation in insurance plans. Any fee 

“scale” or ability to adjust payment can be addressed before 

an appointment is made. Be sure you “shop around” to find 

someone with whom you feel comfortable and confident.

WHO DO I CALL 

Psychiatrists 

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in psychiatric 

disorders, is licensed to practice medicine, and has completed 

a year of internship and 3 years of specialty training. A boardcertified 

psychiatrist has, in addition, practiced for at least 

2 years and passed the written and oral examinations of the 

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Psychiatrists 

can evaluate and diagnose all types of disorders, carry out 

biomedical treatments. Some can perform psychotherapy, and 

work with psychological problems associated with medical 

disorders. 

Psychologists 

Psychologists who conduct psychotherapy and work with 

individuals, groups, or families to resolve problems generally 

are called clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists, 

or school psychologists. They work in many settings – for 

example, mental health centers, hospitals and clinics, schools, 

employee assistance programs, and private practice. In most 

States, a licensed clinical psychologist has completed a doctoral 

degree from a university program with specialized training 

and experience requirements and has successfully completed a 

professional license examination. 

Licensed Professional Counselors 

A Licensed Professional Counselor is licensed by the State 

Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners. The 

counselor must posses a masters degree in counseling or a 

related field and must complete a post-masters program in 

Psychological Counseling. Licensed Professional Counselors 

provide individuals and group counseling for a variety of life 

issues and problems. 

Psychiatric Nurses 

Psychiatric nursing is a specialized area of professional nursing 

practice that is concerned with prevention, treatment, and 

rehabilitation of mental health-related problems. These nurses 

are registered professional nurses who have advanced academic 

degrees at the masters degree level or above. They conduct 

individual, family, and group therapy and also work in mental 

health consultation, education and administration. Some 

nurses called Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medications.

Social Workers 

Psychiatric (or clinical) social workers have masters or doctoral 

degrees in social work, have completed a field supervision 

program, and are licensed/certified. In addition to individual, 

family and group counseling and psychotherapy, they are 

trained in client-centered advocacy. This includes information, 

referral, direct intervention with governmental and civic 

agencies, and expansion of community resources. 

Case Managers and Outreach Workers 

These individuals assist persons with severe mental illness, 

including some who may be homeless, to obtain the services 

they need to live in the community. Most persons with severe 

mental illness need Medicare, social services, and assistance 

from a variety of agencies, including those dealing with 

housing, Social Security, vocational rehabilitation, and mental 

health. Because such services are uncoordinated in many areas, 

case managers provide a critical function to monitor a person’s 

needs and assure that appropriate agencies get involved. In 

many instances they also act as advocates for the client. Case 

managers can be nurses or social workers, and work at mental 

health centers, psychosocial rehabilitation programs, or other 

agencies. 

Marriage and Family Therapist 

Marriage and Family Therapists are licensed by the State Board 

of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners. The individual 

must possess an approved masters degree in a mental health 

field, and have completed a post graduate training program in 

marriage and family therapy. Marriage and family therapists 

may see individuals, couples, and families. They address 

problems in pre-marital and marital relationships, as well as 

issues of parenting, step-parenting and divorce. 

Pastoral Counselors 

Pastoral Counselors are clergy who provide emotional, 

psychological, and spiritual support and counseling. Faith is 

used as a healing resource and sense of comfort and guidance. 

Some Pastoral Counselors may be certified by the American 

Association of Pastoral Counselors. Certified Pastoral 

Counselors have earned at least a masters degree and have 

been clinically supervised for 2-3 years by a Certified Pastoral 

Counselor.

Collier Youth Services, founded in 1927, is a non-profit, nonsectarian 

social service agency that gives at-risk youth a chance 

to grow to their potential through educational, recreational and 

residential programs. 


Collier High School is a co-ed, alternative education and 

day treatment facility for 155 teenagers whose academic 

and emotional needs cannot be met in public school. 

Accredited by the State of New Jersey, Collier offers regular, 

college prep and vocational courses, a strong counseling 

program and extra-curricular activities. 

Collier Group Home is a community-based, residential 

treatment program for teenage girls from throughout New 

Jersey who cannot live at home due to serious personal 

or family problems. With professional guidance and 

counseling, girls prepare to return to their families or to 

live independently. 

Collier House is a transitional living program for young 

women, ages 18 - 22, who are aging out of the foster care 

system, homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. Each 

resident is expected to work and/or continue her education, 

while also receiving individual instruction in life skills, 

computers, money management, and employment from 

our professional staff. 

Kateri Day Camp is a summer recreation program for 

economically disadvantaged children, ages 5 - 12, from 

Monmouth County. The program includes meals, 

transportation, and camp activities in a safe country setting. 

Kateri also Sponsors JET, an eight-week job experience 

and training program that combines life-skills education, 

mentoring, and an incentive-based work experiences for 

at-risk teenagers. 

Project Eco is an extended school-year and recreation 

program designed to meet the academic and therapeutic 

needs of special-education students aged 8 – 17

Description of Programs and Services: 

Behavioral Health/Addiction Recovery Services: 

Individual and group therapy, psychiatric evaluation 

and treatment are offered at three of the CPC locations. 

The Employee Assistance Program spans 10,000 covered 

lives through its 25 contracts. Special mental health 

services for adults with various and persistent mental 

illness include Partial Hospitalization Programs, MICA 

services and supported Employment Program, as well as, 

PACT and Addiction Recovery Services are available for

The Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network in 

Monmouth and Ocean counties consists of Monmouth 

Medical Center in Long Branch and Saint Barnabas 

Behavioral Health Center in Toms River. 

The Network behavioral health services include a full 

continuum of comprehensive mental health programs for 

children, adolescents, and older adults diagnosed with 

psychiatric and dual disorders. All programs are led by 

a multidisciplinary staff of experiences professionals who 

have advanced training and certification in all facts of 

behavioral health. 

The Network offers the following services: Psychiatric 

Emergency Screening Service (P.E.S.S.), Short Term Care 

Facilities (STCF), Children’s Crisis Intervention Services 

(CCIS), Adult Inpatient Programs, Specialized inpatient 

units for Older Adults and Dual Diagnosis, Adult and 

Older Adult Partial Hospitalization Programs, Intensive 

Evening Outpatient Program for Chemical Dependency, 

Outpatient Services

The Rugby School at Woodfield is located on a fouracre 

campus in Wall Township only two miles from the 

sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, parks, cultural and 

recreational facilities. Just 5 minutes west of Belmar, in 

Monmouth County, Rugby is centrally located near the 

Garden State Parkway, State Highways 33, 34, and 35 

and Routes 18 and 195. 

Dedicated to the individual student, Rugby offers 

comprehensive services for primary, intermediate and 

secondary students. Programs include: college placement, 

fast-start college credit programs for seniors, vocational 

testing, in-school simulated work-experience, schoolto-work 

transition services, CIE program, computers, 

behavior management, shepherding, creative writing, 

culinary, visual and performing arts. Rugby also offers a 

full range of professional therapeutic services including 

art therapy, supportive counseling, crisis intervention, 

social skills and individual and group counseling 

by certified practitioners. Rugby’s Health Services 

Department provides psychiatric assessments, evaluation 

and medication management. The Wellness Center 

provides health care in conjunction with collaborating 

physicians. Rugby’s curriculum is well organized and 

comprehensive, combining workshops, lectures, Handson 

activities and one-to-one tutoring sessions necessary 

to enhance learning and allow students to master new 

challenges.
