Conduct of other research projectsThe ACIAR work is strongly linked with other projects in place at all the participatinglaboratories. A major closely-linked project is the APEC Collaborative Grouper R&DNetwork Project (FWG 01/99), which is administered by AFFA and coordinated byNACA. The objectives of the APEC project are to:1. Through the development of a regional research network develop the capacityto establish a sustainable grouper aquaculture industry which will benefit allcollaborating economies.2. Provide an alternative source of income / employment to people currentlyengaging in dangerous and illegal fishing practices.3. Protect endangered reefs and reef fish from the pressures of illegal anddangerous fishing practices.4. Develop a new aquaculture industry with significant export potential andeconomic benefit to a diversity of stakeholders.5. Reduce substantially the current reliance on wild-caught fingerlings foraquaculture purposes because capture of wild juveniles is probablyunsustainable, and is sometimes carries out using destructive fishingtechniques which can have significant impact on the long-term status of reeffish stocks.Through APEC involvement, the expansion of an existing South-East Asian initiativeon collaborative research into grouper culture can be extended to more economies inthe Asia-Pacific region. The role of APEC will be to enhance the extension ofgrouper research and facilitate the development of a network throughout the APECregion and beyond, to ensure that all economies in the region can benefit from thedevelopment of improved technology in live reef fish culture techniques. The APEC Collaborative Grouper R&D Network Project has held two regionalworkshops to date :1. Hat Yai, Thailand, 7–9 April 1999This workshop was attended by 43 delegates from 14 APEC and NACA membereconomies.
