Sharry nationalresearch competition <strong>of</strong> the AmericanCollege <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics (ACP).The Osstell® transducer attached to theimplant vibrates. Implant stability canthen be measured and tracked by resonancefrequency analysis.Follow<strong>in</strong>g completion <strong>of</strong> her <strong>prosthodontics</strong>residency last year at theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Texas Health ScienceCenter <strong>in</strong> San Antonio, Dr. Barewalbecame an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>in</strong> theDepartment <strong>of</strong> Prosthodontics at theOregon Health and Science University.She is now course director <strong>of</strong> <strong>fixed</strong><strong>prosthodontics</strong> at OHSU.Dr. Barewal’s research on implant mobilityimpressed Dr. David L. Cochran,Department Chair <strong>of</strong> Periodontics atthe University <strong>of</strong> Texas Health ScienceCenter and her research supervisor.“One th<strong>in</strong>g that struck me was herdeterm<strong>in</strong>ation to get her work done.She is a very goal-oriented personwho focuses on her outcomes andthen works hard to achieve them,”Dr. Cochran says.He was also impressed with Dr. Barewal’sability to organize outstand<strong>in</strong>g presentations.She has presented at the ITIWorld Symposium (2002), the ACPnational meet<strong>in</strong>g, the Texas ACPsection meet<strong>in</strong>g (2002), and localstudy clubs.Dr. Robert J. Cron<strong>in</strong>, her graduateprogram director, encouraged herparticipation <strong>in</strong> AO, where shepresented a table cl<strong>in</strong>ic demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g prosthodontictechniques at the 2001Annual Meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Toronto.Dur<strong>in</strong>g her San Antonio residency,Dr. Barewal completed amaster’s degree <strong>in</strong> the GraduateSchool <strong>of</strong> Biomedical Sciences.Her thesis <strong>in</strong>volved a cl<strong>in</strong>icalstudy to evaluate the stability <strong>of</strong>ITI implants with an SLA surfacedur<strong>in</strong>g the early heal<strong>in</strong>gperiod. Interest<strong>in</strong>gly, it was at the AOmeet<strong>in</strong>g that she first met with the entireteam <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the research study anddecided on a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary protocol.“This study has sparked a lot <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terestas it showed much about implant stabilitythat we didn’t know. It contributedto a better understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the relationshipbetween bone type, stabilitypatterns, and load<strong>in</strong>g protocols. The<strong>in</strong>formation gathered from this researchwas far reach<strong>in</strong>g and could impact currentheal<strong>in</strong>g protocols,” she said.Dr. Barewal graduated from theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Toronto Dental School<strong>in</strong> 1992. Her dental class was one <strong>of</strong> thefirst <strong>in</strong> North America to have a predoctoralimplant program under thedirectorship <strong>of</strong> Dr. George A. Zarb,Toronto, ON, Canada.After receiv<strong>in</strong>g her DDS degree, shecompleted a general practice residencyat Toronto’s Mount S<strong>in</strong>ai Hospital. Shethen practiced as a general dentist for sixyears, taught at the University <strong>of</strong> BritishColumbia and participated <strong>in</strong> severalstudy groups <strong>in</strong> Vancouver beforeenroll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the San Antonio prosthodonticresidency <strong>in</strong> 1999.“Reva is extremely conscientious, verydevoted to her patients, and s<strong>in</strong>cerely<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> research and a career <strong>in</strong>dental education. Wolf<strong>in</strong>ger, Fort Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,PA; Carlos Aparicio, Barcelona, Spa<strong>in</strong>; and R. GilbertTriplett, Dallas, TX. Patients treated under the grant programreceive treatment without charge. The major implantcompanies have all agreed to participate <strong>in</strong> the treatment bysupply<strong>in</strong>g the necessary components consumed <strong>in</strong> the treatment<strong>of</strong> the patients without charge.Dur<strong>in</strong>g a period <strong>of</strong> time when economic conditions makeit difficult for patients to afford needed treatment, manypatients’ lives are changed through this worthy Foundationcharitable grant program.
