Sharry nationalresearch competition of the AmericanCollege of Prosthodontics (ACP).The Osstell® transducer attached to theimplant vibrates. Implant stability canthen be measured and tracked by resonancefrequency analysis.Following completion of her prosthodonticsresidency last year at theUniversity of Texas Health ScienceCenter in San Antonio, Dr. Barewalbecame an assistant professor in theDepartment of Prosthodontics at theOregon Health and Science University.She is now course director of fixedprosthodontics at OHSU.Dr. Barewal’s research on implant mobilityimpressed Dr. David L. Cochran,Department Chair of Periodontics atthe University of Texas Health ScienceCenter and her research supervisor.“One thing that struck me was herdetermination to get her work done.She is a very goal-oriented personwho focuses on her outcomes andthen works hard to achieve them,”Dr. Cochran says.He was also impressed with Dr. Barewal’sability to organize outstanding presentations.She has presented at the ITIWorld Symposium (2002), the ACPnational meeting, the Texas ACPsection meeting (2002), and localstudy clubs.Dr. Robert J. Cronin, her graduateprogram director, encouraged herparticipation in AO, where shepresented a table clinic demonstratinginteresting prosthodontictechniques at the 2001Annual Meeting in Toronto.During her San Antonio residency,Dr. Barewal completed amaster’s degree in the GraduateSchool of Biomedical Sciences.Her thesis involved a clinicalstudy to evaluate the stability ofITI implants with an SLA surfaceduring the early healingperiod. Interestingly, it was at the AOmeeting that she first met with the entireteam involved in the research study anddecided on a preliminary protocol.“This study has sparked a lot of interestas it showed much about implant stabilitythat we didn’t know. It contributedto a better understanding of the relationshipbetween bone type, stabilitypatterns, and loading protocols. Theinformation gathered from this researchwas far reaching and could impact currenthealing protocols,” she said.Dr. Barewal graduated from theUniversity of Toronto Dental Schoolin 1992. Her dental class was one of thefirst in North America to have a predoctoralimplant program under thedirectorship of Dr. George A. Zarb,Toronto, ON, Canada.After receiving her DDS degree, shecompleted a general practice residencyat Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital. Shethen practiced as a general dentist for sixyears, taught at the University of BritishColumbia and participated in severalstudy groups in Vancouver beforeenrolling in the San Antonio prosthodonticresidency in 1999.“Reva is extremely conscientious, verydevoted to her patients, and sincerelyinterested in research and a career indental education. Teams included Drs. Patrick Henry,West Perth, Australia; Glenn J. Wolfinger, Fort Washington,PA; Carlos Aparicio, Barcelona, Spain; and R. GilbertTriplett, Dallas, TX. Patients treated under the grant programreceive treatment without charge. The major implantcompanies have all agreed to participate in the treatment bysupplying the necessary components consumed in the treatmentof the patients without charge.During a period of time when economic conditions makeit difficult for patients to afford needed treatment, manypatients’ lives are changed through this worthy Foundationcharitable grant program.
