Foundation Review Board approvesunprecedented 6 charitable grantsBy Dr. David GuichetA Foundation Review Board comprised<strong>of</strong> four past presidents <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Academy</strong> recently reviewed andapproved an unprecedented six <strong>in</strong>dividualpatient treatment grant applicationsfor the calendar year 2002. Thereview committee was comprised <strong>of</strong>Drs. Charles Berman, New York, NY(AO President 1992), Stephen Parel,Dallas, TX (President 1995), MichaelDr. David GuichetBlock, New Orleans, LA (President1996), and Abraham Ingber, Bethesda, MD (President 2000).A new review structure has allowed for timely grant approvals.Applications are now reviewed quarterly and awards madebased upon the extent <strong>of</strong> the treatment undertaken and theresources available for fund<strong>in</strong>g. Currently, grant awards rangefrom $1,000 to $4,000.2002 Charitable Grants will be made to Drs. Joseph A.Toljanic, Chicago, for treatment <strong>of</strong> a 42-year-old womansuffer<strong>in</strong>g from cleidocranial dysplasia and irritable bowelsyndrome; James A. Chandler, Lex<strong>in</strong>gton, KY, for a 66-yearoldman suffer<strong>in</strong>g from a degenerative cerebellar disorder;V<strong>in</strong>cent J. Prestip<strong>in</strong>o, Bethesda, MD, for a 27-year-old malewith complex dental treatment needs; Vicki C. Petropoulous,Philadelphia, for a 42-year-old woman with cleidocranial dysplasiawith many miss<strong>in</strong>g teeth; James H. Doundoulakis,New York, for a 62- year-old man with full edentulous maxillaryarch and partially edentulous mandibular arch and manymiss<strong>in</strong>g teeth; Carlos Aparicio, Barcelona, Spa<strong>in</strong>, to treat thesecond patient <strong>in</strong> the same family for amelogenesis imperfecta.Through the charitable grant program, the Foundation seeksto make a very big impact <strong>in</strong> the lives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dividuals served.The Foundation’s stated mission is to spread the messageabout the success <strong>of</strong> osseo<strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>in</strong> ways that the<strong>Academy</strong> cannot.
