The new terminal,with a quay length of 1.6 km, consisting4 berths, has a handling capacity of 2.5million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).With a draft of 17 meters alongside,the terminal is fully capable ofaccommodating the biggest of the newgeneration 13,000 TEU megacontainer ships.Mohammed Al-Muallem, Senior VicePresident & Managing Director, DP<strong>World</strong>-UAE, commenting on <strong>Jebel</strong> <strong>Ali</strong>Port’s Terminal 2 said, “The secondand the final phase of Terminal 2construction will be completed in 2008.Upon completion Terminal 2 will coveran area of 180 hectares and will have2,600 meters of quay length consisting7 berths and a draft of 17 metersalongside. The terminal will be fullyequipped and operational in the firstquarter of 2009. Themega crane operating at <strong>Jebel</strong> <strong>Ali</strong>terminals are among the world’s largestand the most efficient cranes and arecapable of lifting two 40-foot containersor four 20-foot containers in one movefrom ship to quay or quay to ship. Oncefully functional, the terminal 2 will have29 cranes operating at the terminal.To enhance the port’s operationscapability, Terminal 2 will use advancedNavis Sparks operational system, whichwill be equipped with an automated gateaccess system. The automated gatesare expected to be ready at the <strong>Jebel</strong> <strong>Ali</strong>Port shortly.
