Then, they will beapplying for college in theUnited States. As a first step in establishingthis program at STM,Admissions Director KrisPost and Academic AdvisorSara Vahl participated in a12-day recruitment trip toChina in late April. Whilethere, they participated inrecruiting visits, school events, student interviews, and mediastops across the country tohelp launch this internationalprogram. As they visited withparents, prospective students, agency representativesand school officials, it wasapparent that many Chinesestudents, with fine Englishskills, are interested instudying abroad.Posing for pictures with school officials.Visiting a middle school in Shenzhen, China.Great opportunity to represent STM in China! In the past, internationalstudents had two optionsfor living arrangements: homestaywith a host familyor boarding school. Ourpartnership with WIA hasopened up another avenue. The WIA model is called“Total Care.” Chinesestudents live together in adorm-like atmosphere. Theyare driven to school, attendclasses, have English (ESL)support during the schoolday, and return to the dormafter school or whenevertheir extra-curricular activitiesare completed. They havebreakfast and dinner together, along with supervised studyand leisure time. The abilityto live with other studentswho are experiencing thesame transition is extremelyappealing to these youngpeople. The goal is to recruit 20Chinese students for the fallsemester at Saint ThomasMore. We are working inconjunction with Dominican,Pius XI, Martin Luther, andCatholic Memorial whoare also partnering withWIA. Saint Thomas Morewill continue to provideupdates on the progress ofthis exciting initiative.
